Of course, there are many critics of the UN who see it as a corrupt institution that undermines US sovereignty (never mind the fact that the US was one of its key architects, and that critics of the UN seldom take aim at the WTO for its affect on sovereignty.)

But the following may be food for thought or, rather, thought for food.

This is one of those instances in which we ought to let the free market fix this. Remove grain subsidies and watch meat prices skyrocket. Meat will still be around if you want it and are willing to pay the actual costs for it.

Same with US taxpayer-funded dairy subsidies, ~5 billion over the past 15 years. The viral 'Got Milk?' campaign? You paid for that, and a lot more.

If consumers paid the actual cost of factory produced milk (and other dairy products), suddenly Snowville would seem a lot more reasonably priced.

Yes, but grain prices themselves would skyrocket as well, too, which would mean that as a comparative issue, meat might not look any worse (or at least not much worse) as before the grain subsidies were removed.

That said, I fully support ending the subsidies, both for economic efficiency and fiscal soundness reasons.

Why do people assume prices would rocket up? Most agricultural subsidies create a pricing floor, not a ceiling.

Been thinking of indoor container gardening myself.

You can grow peppers year round and the plants will survive so long as you keep them out of the extreme cold during the winter.

Not to threadjack - but yeah, I thought for a while today that an over-winter basement garden was going to be the answer. Then I remember the little furry jerks who live in my house, where no plant shall be unplundered.

I'm lucky enough that my new raised boxes back onto the back of my garage. I'm thinking it'll be a fairly simple matter to make a frame for some plastic. Woe to the hoodlum who thinks to mess with it!

Oh yeah. One of my little furballs devours baby's breath especially but considers any plant he can get to a salad. The other would likely treat it as an indoor bathroom ( which is kinda why I'm leery of growing too many food plants outside... he'd either poop on them, eat them, or dig them up for the sheer joy of it. He's so my dog ;) ).

I grow spinach and arugula in my very sunny downtown indoor windowsill windowboxes, it is really fun. I usually eat it while it's still infant, I can never wait until it grows to baby size. I can do cherry tomatoes and herbs there too.
