I live near the Short North UDF, I can walk there for things needed (like Club Soda and ice cream). But lately, things have gotten so out of hand that I won't go there anymore. I'm sick of being told a sob story by a man beside a tree-- a different story every time. People hang out there and pop out just at the right time to beg for drug money. It's prostitution central too with the "bois" on the street. I'm a city guy, but as a regular for ten years at this store, I'm over it. Don't mean to be mean, but I'm saying "no more drama" to this UDF. It's not cute anymore (was it ever?). I'll drive somewhere else. Am I nuts? Comments?

I think you are being a fussy fuss. I love that UDF and the socializing that can be done outside the door. Its a great hang out spot. Have you ever hung out by that tree in that mulchy area? It is really nice to loiter there on a hot day. It is shady and pleasant. It is the best pocket park in the SN.

Seriously? A fussy fuss? You hang out there, really?

If I had a say I'd pull a Giuliani and put'em on a plane to Mexico City. Wait.. I'm really not that heartless. It is almost inevitable in an urban enviroment. I just ignore them, 100%. As a result I've never had an altercation after ignoring a destitute.

Heartless? How long you been around here? Urbanites should have to put up with more than gated communities, but not tolerate anything and everything. I've had plenty of altercations this summer alone! I've had to change my walk back home so the pissed person following me wouldn't know where I lived. Phooey.

In your most recent situation... I would have walked straight home.. with a fake limp, acting out of breath and confused, and left the door slightly cracked.. then waited in the darkness with my Winchester 1300 defender. Surprise!!

Thanks for the advice, but I'm just not going there anymore until they redo it or stop selling 40-oz bottles, or have a full-time security guard there. It's out of control in my opinion, and I'm pretty 'hard core' (or at least I think so.) Perhaps Rudy G was right about petty crimes. I'm over it. No more UDF drama.

Haah.. Speaking of security guards, what's up with the one non-stop at the Giant Eagle? Seems like a pretty safe place to me.. much safer than the UDF, White Castle, or anywhere around that "check into cash" or whatever the name of it is.

I say you get right in his face and start fake crying and tell him your sob story, made up and ultra embellished. Works with children really well...when you boo hoo whine back to your kids they stop...boo hoo whine back to him. As for the others I would be afraid to talk to a prosititute for fear it would be misconstrued as a come on or request for service. Do you have friends with motorcycles......have a big bunch of harley heads come to the UDF on a semi regular basis. Fart really bad every time you are there. That is about all I have, except the good old fashioned letter to corporate maybe they will check the store sales and decide there may be a theft situation and send a security Bob out to keep people cool.
Hang in there....it is Autumn Equinox...the biggest brightest moon situation of the year...you may be overly sensitive and they may be overly wacky. I have insomnia during full moons.

Yeah, I have hung out there occasionally. It is a nice little spot. I do not panhandle or anything like that. Try it out. You are just being anti-social.

Maybe the constant security presence is the reason for its level of safety. I remember some riff raff going in and out of there before, but now, nothing.

You so realize the one consistency with all those altercations, right?
That you were involved in them.
I have conversations with homeless people almost every day and haven't had an altercation in my life with one, nor do I hand them piles of cash.
I will give you one tidbit though that could save you a lot of time and trouble. Buy a pack of cigarettes and just keep it with you. That's 20 "get out of homeless free" cards in every pack.

Or 20 reasons to start (or re-start in my case) smoking...

Those vagrants are invisible to me.
I look through them.
I don't acknowlege anything about them.
This seems to work quite well, it almost scares them sometimes I think.
Ghost Joey, out.

I used to do the whole ignoring thing, but it almost got me assaulted in Chicago a couple of times (although on the train it's a bit of dicier maneuver since you can't just keep walking).
