Ok, I gave in Friday and signed up for twitter - micro blogging tool. I think it could be interesting if we get more people on it.
Anyone want to give it a shot? so far I've got a food blogger, an insurance salesman and someone in public radio. . .

it's got kind of a chat-room feel to it. like an extended IM with people but without the urgency of having to respond immediately. plus it's built for IM and TXT.
I don't know that I'm sold either. that's why i'm trying it. In my 'research' I think it gets cooler if you get more people into it.

I signed up a while ago... here I am.
Frankly I don't see the utility from an end user point of view.
I do, however, see the utility for the company who created it. Pow! Instant social network- and run what people twitter over a semantic concept or lexical network... and you can probably start to derive some interesting things about people.
If people were smart they would subvert this kind of thing by twittering nonsense and adding only non-friends... now there's a concept. Get everyone you know on X social networking tool to unfriend all of their friends, only add people they don't know, and only add "data" that is untrue.
And there you have the ability of the individual to subvert a billion dollar company. Simple.

my point is that it would be sensible and probably doable to create a distributed social network where your data and relationships aren't being used by media and marketing companies to build more wealth for the already ridiculously wealthy.

In another lifetime I think I would have unlimited text messaging, and be on twitter all the time. The most interesting things to me are the concept of mob blogging and having a second sense of what is going on with everyone you know. Sort of like having a magnet implanted into your finger, you would be able to detect iron vs. titanium, where the electricity is in the walls, etc, but with things like twitter, you have a 6th sense to uhh... not only see dead people, but to know where your people are.
But like any new idea like to combat spam, it would require everyone's opt-in or something to really work... and people I know are more on Pownce, or Facebook, or (gasp) CU or something ;p
I would love to see a big in/out board... ya know... to know if it is a good time to randomly bug my friends see if they wanna get a beer or something... but then again people like could be the reason such a thing isn't popular! hehe

...depending on the source, the numbers change slightly. The universal prediction is the same: ad spending on social networks is going to skyrocket.
Many companies are going to take advantage of the abundance of personal information available on social networks, using it to develop extremely targeted advertising campaigns...

Yeah, I haven't been particularly impressed by Twitter either - I can see it for the folks who are almost non-stop texting, because if you do have a network large enough, then you do have a sort of finger on the pulse of your crew.
It's also OK to use to keep on top of updates for things -- but in that use, it's basically a RSS feed with 5% of the usefulness.
In the end it strikes me as basically a stand-alone version of the MySpace or Facebook "status" field, with built-in IM and SMS.
That said, I can see more usefulness for it to me than Pownce. I checked out Pownce when it first came out, and can't really see what good that one was supposed to be at all...

Lemme see... did you try email, ftp, put it on a web site for download, file exchange via any instant messenger client, iDisk via .Mac, WebDAV, services like http://senduit.com/ or http://www.yousendit.com/ or 8,000 others, throw it on the network or a shared disc (where appropriate), USB drive, or a text message, or probably 40 other ways that I didn't think of off of the top of my head?
I call bullshit.
All the basic features are totally free. We run some small advertisements in your list of notes but you can send and receive pretty much anything. You can also upgrade to a pro account for a really reasonable annual price, which gives you some nice things like no ads, the ability to send much bigger files, a wider variety of themes, and more.
HAS THE WHOLE WORLD GONE CRAZY? It's like fucking 1984. War is peace. Freedom is slavery. When did people routinely start calling X something it isn't and having people hop on the bandwagon while whistling "Happy Days Are Here Again"? You wanted to get in on the Social Networking craze and develop a ad revenue/user subscription based service. You didn't have trouble sharing information. If you did, you're morons and I can't imagine your software will be groundbreaking in any way if you are stumped by problems like "Gee, how can I get this file/message/event/link over to Biff right quick?!?"
