To answer your question Walker, yes I watch tv shows and movies on my laptop all the time, I even listen to radio shows on it.
It is ironic that leftovers says that because it is 100% true. When I tell people all the time that I do not have a tv, they assume it is because I am trying to be edgy or "check out". It is quite the opposite. My last tv broke, I wanted a new tv, and still do, but every time I wait to buy the model I want at the price I want, a new model arrives, and I wait for that.
Meanwhile, I get movies, tv, whatever I want on my pc. Because of this I am in no hurry to buy a tv, and probably will not buy one for another two years or so. I will own one again eventually, but I am in no rush at all.
The other, and also major factor is, I am a minimalist, who likes being able to relocate quickly, so my living room only includes a couch, and 2 bar stools. This is also the reason I got rid of my desktop for a 17" desktop replacement, I like being very mobile.
I've experienced a similar response when I tell people I don't own a TV. I'm not trying to be edgy or make a statement, I just get bored passively sitting there for hours on end. There are other things I usually want to be doing. As far as cable goes, the onscreen controls, the user interface for cable is ugly as hell, slow and makes me insane. I don't have the patience to sit there navigating 1000 plus channels for hours in a linear fashion with that ugly crap, and pay for it.
Sometimes I like to watch sports. The only sports I would go out of my way to watch are basketball and tennis, and some boxing matches. If I feel the need to watch them, I'll go to a bar with friends.
Also, I'm comfortable with silence or music. I don't need a TV on just for the sake of being on to keep me company. I have a lot of friends that always need to have a TV on just for the sake of being on. I can't stand when bars or restaurants have TVs blaring to keep people company. That's what staring at your cellphone is supposed to accomplish. :)
