Turning 30...need to eat

I'm a lurker, and have been for a loooooonnnng time. But today I'm getting a game cube from a post in the Classifieds, so I thought I would throw out a question:
I'm turning 30, and my parents are coming to town next weekend to take me to dinner.
Something we do every year- usually I pick M or Mitchell's or something like that. This year I was going to do Rosendale's (never been) but I heard something about the chef leaving? Maybe I'm wrong.
Anyways, any good suggestions for delicious food that is close to the short north/grandview area that ISN'T run of the mill Cameron Mitchell or older places I've probably already been to?

I've heard nothing about Rosendale leaving. He's expanding the restaurant actually.
I've never been to Alana's (I know, I know) but I think it sounds like a good choice. My recent trip to The Refectory was pretty awesome, and many people have said good things about Latitude 41 for special occasions. :D

I'll second Deepwood or the Refrectory. The latter is a bit more formal but the owner (the matre 'd) is super nice. I'd look over the menus for both places before you go.
DON"T go to Alana's unless you want to risk getting your father chewed out by the owner.

Walker: Shame on you.
Alana's, the Refectory, and Rosendales would all be excellent choices. The feel of the Refectory is more classic/French, and the feel of Rosendales is more contemporary and razor-clean... as compared to Alana's, which is artsy and eclectic, and based more on local foods.
If you're going to Alana's and going there on a Tuesday-Thursday, consider asking them to do a tasting menu. I mention this because it's not on their menu or on their website. She doesn't usually have time to do them Friday or Saturday, but she can during the week. In any case, if you have any dietary restrictions or requests, let them know when you make the reservations and they'll do their best to accommodate you. And although the chef is famously brusque, she's not arbitrary -- she generally won't get in your face as long as you respect the food, and she's one of the few chefs I know of who personally greets each guest with a complementary amuse bouche.

What great ideas- thanks for answering, and now I know to contribute more. I think I was confusing Rosendale's with Handke's. I may look into that still.
My parents (pretty conservative) went to Alana's once and weren't all that pleased with it, though I've always wanted to go but haven't been yet. Maybe I'll hit the boyfriend up for Alana's, and the parent's up for Rosendales, and get two great meals for my birthday.

Rosendales might be a little contemporary for conservative parents, but the Refectory would be just right.
By the way, re-reading the initial post -- a) welcome, and b) what does buying a game cube in the classifieds have to do with any of this???

I've been to the Refectory, and it's delicious, but it took us 3 hours to get our food!
Regarding the game cube:
I was lurking on here, saw a post in the Classifieds for the game cube, and I contacted the person for it....met up this morning and picked it up. I was so happy with the exchange, that I decided to finally post something, since I obviously benefited from the forum, even though I'd never really contributed to it.
Now I'll probably contribute more and benefit more too.

I've only been to Rosendale's once, but I was treated to an absolutely incredible meal. Easily on par with Handke's and the Refectory.

Whoever donated that Game Cube sounds like an amazing human being. (And watch out, this place become about 100 times more addictive when you start posting. My workplace productivity has certainly suffered for it.)

The person who donated the Game Cube certainly IS a supercool human being. I work with teens at a library and we have gaming tourneys and whatnot- and it's always a pain to round up the games and gaming systems for the events. So now the library has their own! So so grateful. If anyone has old Game Cube games they want to donate, let me know! :D

I thought Chef Rosendale was taking a hiatus from the restaurant to focus on his Bocuse d'Or project. Maybe that's only if he wins the semi-finals in September but I figured for sure he'd be working just as hard to get ready for the semis.
POSSIBLY RELATED QUESTION: Anyone know who drives the sharp black BMW with the "LARDON 1" license plate? Seemed like an appropriate tag for a chef's car.

Refectory. Bistro menu. Refectory food, three courses, $22.
And I've never waited for a half-hour, let alone three (!!), for my food to arrive.
