With the Colts axing the head coach yesterday, I was wondering what the chances of Tressel stepping in as the head coach. I am curious to hear what CU thinks the pro and cons would be and what the chances might be that Tressel will move to the NFL.

I think there's about zero chance. Right now is the most important time in their franchise history. They're coming off their worst season and need someone to develop Andrew Luck when they take him with the #1 pick. They've also stated that they don't plan on trading Manning, so they're going to need someone who's going to be able to handle the heat of possibly managing those two personalities in the locker room.
Tressel isn't known for developing quarterbacks at the NFL level, and that's pretty much priority #1 for the Colts right now. They're going to look to someone with more experience and a much higher pedigree than coaching at Youngstown State followed by getting run out of Ohio State due to scandal.
Bottom line, they need an offensive minded coach. Tressel is certainly not that. They'll likely target a high profile offensive coordinator from the NFL.

I think Tressel always understood his limitations, he never stated that he had dreams of coaching in the NFL. I don't think Tressel ball would translate to the NFL. It would be as bad as Lou Holtz's flirtation with the NFL, or pre USC and Seahawks Pete Carrol. Some people are just built to be college coaches, and that was definitely Tressel's niche.

I think they're being set up for failure, and if I were Andrew Luck I'd try to pull an Eli Manning and get myself to a different team. How often has one player come in to a completely decimated franchise, from top to bottom, and succeeded? They will bring in some coach known for developing quarterbacks, like a Norv Turner, but like with Norv Turner in San Diego those things don't work out.
It's hard to say how Tressel would do in the NFL.. he certainly showed he can set up a solid stable system, which is the most important thing that the colts need right now. He can always hire a good quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator.
But at the same time, he succeeded at OSU, where you can draw in the best talent simply by being OSU and overpower everyone. It wouldn't be so easy at the next level.

The inmates were running the asylum while he was at OSU. It just took a few years to snowball until it was out of control and gained national attention.
The #1 attribute an NFL head coach has to have is the ability to manage egos. Tressel pretty much showed that he was unable to do that at Ohio State. Like you said, he was more than supplemented by the fact that he was at Ohio State and could recruit the nations top athletes. The NFL isn't about recruiting, it's about coaching and keeping your players in check.

At the same time, a coach can fail here pretty easily, too. I don't really care about Tressel not keeping track of his students getting paid extra for jobs, free tattoos, free cars. In the NFL he won't have to worry about such stupid rules. He still had an aura about him that made players respect him, which would carry over.
But I do think in order to be successful, he should only be that manager type person. His coaching was frustrating even against college opponents. He'd need to get good coordinators to build/call the playbook for him.

3 BCS bowls, .810 win percentage, and a National Title at OSU, 4 titles in 1-AA at YSU.... I don't see how you do that without managing egos. If you think college kids aren't egotistical, especially at that level, I'd say you're way off.
I think his bigger problem was managing his own ego.
Now that he's knocked down a few pegs, it'd be pretty interesting to see if he can walk the walk in the NFL. Not sure if he can, but it'd make for good TV...Posted 4 months ago # -
I could be wrong, time will tell. I just think that the Colts are entering one of their most pivotal movements in franchise history with possibly rebuilding with a new franchise quarterback, arguably the best college QB to come along since John Elway. Gambling on hiring a college coach with no NFL experience seems crazy to me.
Look at all the genius college coaches that have tried to make the jump into the NFL and fallen flat on their face in the past decade. Nick Saban, Charlie Weis, Bobby Petrino, Lane Kiffin, Dennis Erickson, Steve Spurrier, and the jury is still out on Pete Carroll. All huge busts. The NFL is not college ball.

3 yards and a cloud of dust doesn't work in today's NFL, that's for sure.

If he is hired (and if the Colts do succeed with Tressel & Luck), I'm going to hug all my loved ones goodbye, because that will confirm that the Mayans were right.
At least the Colts get hefty salaries, so no need for them to sell Colts memorabilia for tattoos. ;)
