I'm sure it's going to have to do with fundraising. I've heard akron is interested in a new basketball arena and they are definately improving their campus. This is really the third big name hire they've had recently as they just hired ex auburn hc tommy bowden as their football coach and ex north carolina st hc chuck amato as an assistant. This move makes's sense in that tressel is a akron alum who is still a huge name with the alumni and the surrounding community.

"Strategic engagement" I'm guessing is something in that mesentery between public relations, lobbying, fundraising, and community outreach. I think that Tressel will fit the position well. Notwithstanding Tattoogate (sigh), he still has a significant amount of goodwill in Ohio, and he's a good speaker and was involved with community-outreach functions during his time at OSU as well. In addition, he has a lot of Northeast Ohio connections that even predate his OSU days, since he came from Youngstown State.
