Yes. I'm glad your line came out ok. Cleaning is always the first step, really.
Smitty is likely Forest Smith of the Smith Excavating Company. He was, in fact, the lowest bidder on my job and did a fantastic job.
The line, in my case, was collapsed entirely at the T where it connects to the city line, and in fact the city line was badly broken and we ended up having to repair 5 feet of main sewer line too. This made it a very expensive dig because of the requirements Grandview has to repair their street back to their specifications. much of the expense was street repair, in fact. The permits and inspection fees alone were quite a bit.
Every quote we got was upwards of 10K for the dig/line repair (not including repair of the city main pipe, that's not included in what I have paid).
Rescue rooter was the highest quote for the dig/repair and could not do line re-lining. They also lost 5 feet of their cable snake in the line while they were cleaning it out and trying to "punch through" to the city line.
Roto rooter offered a slightly lower cost for the excavation, but was significantly higher for the line re-lining.
Water works gave a good quote for the dig/repair but said they could not do the lining, but they recommended a company called FlowLine or Roto Rooter to do the lining. I also knew flowline from my previous life working with an engineering firm that handled city sewer lines. The rep from Water works was very professional and admitted that what i needed was just beyond what they were prepared to do and advised me that it really would be a good idea to have the line re-lined if I was going to the trouble of digging up an end of it.
FlowLine had the best quote for the liner and a very good reputation in the industry. The cost to have them reline the entire sewer compared to the cost of digging up the line AGAIN was low enough that it was a reasonable add-on to insure that we will never have to worry about roots or cracked pipes and should never have to excavate again. Also, we have documentation to show that the next owner of the house will simply never have any root problems.
Smith excavating was slightly less for the dig/repair than any other quote. And, Mr. Smith has an excellent relationship with the City and the Inspectors, and with Flowline. Smith Excavating did the dig/repair job and coordinated interactions with the city and Flowline very well, and made the entire process run very smoothly from start to finish. The city inspector was completely satisfied with both the line repair and street repair and had no issues whatsoever with the work, including on the city-owned lines.
Initial cleanout and radio mapping of the line (to pinpoint the digging), Non-destructive Hydroexcavation around the city line, and post excavation cleaning/derooting was sub contracted to Chuck's Sewer and Drain cleaning. They did an impressive surgical operation with a pipe camera and a grabber remotely pulling out Rescue Rooter's trapped cable section.
Once the sewer line was fixed and cleaned and once again connected to the city service, but while the big deep hole was still open, FlowLine, in an impressively fast operation, jet cleaned the line and installed their liner product called Maxliner. Information about this is here: http://maxlinerusa.com/ I saved a few samples. It's tough stuff and is completely seamless end-to-end to keep roots out.
There was a couple of day wait for fresh chemical to be ordered, but since the sewer was already reconnected at that point it didn't bother me too much. The sewer line was taken back out of service for 24 hours to allow the liner to completely cure.
In summary here are my observations:
The first tech Rescue Rooter sent (when i thought i just had roots in the pipe) tried very hard but he wasn't very good. In the end I do not think they offer good value for the price. Losing the pipe snake in the line was pretty uncool.
Chuck's Septic Tank, Sewer & Drain Cleaning Inc is a good company to call if you need your line rooted and cleaned. A bit less cost than others, and good competent people who know how to do their job.
Smith Excavating (Forest Smith) did a very good job at a reasonable price. He also didn't mind me personally overseeing the process and documenting the entire project. They did not cut any corners. Mr. Smith was very meticulous in his attention to detail and is clearly extremely experienced in his field.
Flowline L.L.C. did an excellent job jet cleaning and re-lining the line, including providing before and after lining videos (on DVD) of the line camera runs through the pipes for documentation of the work. I would recommend them to anyone who needs re-lining services.
