A letter sent out by the Friends of the Lower Olentangy (FLOW):
We had an amazing turn-out today for our Tree Planting Event with the Battelle River and Stream Team and Columbus Recreation and Parks.
1450 seedling trees were planted in a previously mowed field. (about 1 acre)
22 larger trees were planted around the casting pond
1/2 acre of honeysuckle was removed
Natural barrier was constructed to protect the newly planted seedlings.
Trash was picked up throughout the park
148 volunteers donated about 3 hours each = 444 Total Volunteer Hours
And everyone seemed to be having fun.
Thanks to Julie Smiley, our amazing Adopt-A-Spot coordinator for coordinating with Keep Columbus Beautiful, picking up all of the tools, organizing us at the event and working tirelessly to be sure that the new trees do not get mowed down. The Friends of Alum Creek and Tributaries loaned us their watering pump and 7 shovels. Franklin Soil and Water loaned us 20 dibble planters and buckets. Riverside Native Trees delivered the larger trees for free and donated a large red oak to the event. Oakland Park Nursery allowed us to buy 4 trees at wholesale prices and set up a wholesale account for our other planting needs. The Battelle River and Stream Team donated the funding for the 1450 seedling trees, sorted the trees, did the registration, took a boatload of photographs and provided all 148 people with an amazing spread of food and drink. Columbus City Councilman Zack Klein joined us and SNP stopped in to take some pictures, so keep your eyes out for some photo coverage next week.
