Unknowingly, Donna, now 39, had post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). And she would become the first subject in a pioneering American research programme to test the effects of MDMA â€“ otherwise known as the dancefloor drug Ecstasy â€“ on PTSD sufferers.

A history of psychological trauma or depression often creates a situation where the brain's concentrations, production or uptake of neurotransmitters are already disturbed. To use Ecstacy to flood the brain with relaxing neurotransmitters may be very beneficial in the short-term, but in the long-term may set the nervous system up for even greater imbalance.
It sounds to me like these doctors are using this therapy in "last ditch" situations, but I would be very concerned if this became a commonplace therapy.

I meant to say please provide this treatment to all persons who are angry, evil, and full of hate. They should do a study to see if it could stop people from wanting to have a war--government leaders have to roll for 3 days straight before they can go to war...if after the third day they still feel like going to war, then ok fine. :lol:

If that took place, it would play out like this: government leaders roll for three days straight, make fantastic new plans for an absolute utopia, then one month later when they're all bottoming out, the entire world blows up in one giant atomic tantrum.

I am sure the Maharishi would be very displeased. He kicked people out of the ashram for smoking pot as drugs are not part of ayurvedic living. However, most of the people who would greatly benefit from the use of ecstasy would never live according to ayurveda or meditate or anything like that, so they can have pure MDMA without guilt until either they are more loving or their brains are so fried they can only be peaceful and harmonious. :lol:

PTSD is extremely difficult to effectively treat, and many people who suffer from it end up with profoundly compromised lives. Last ditch is about all they have in many cases. For those people, this drug might make a difference.
SSRI's and other drugs of that nature are handed out like candy and psychopharmacologists are still not exactly sure how they work, nor are they sure about all of the long term effects. I am just as wary of them as I would be about MDMA. I guess my point is that MDMA may be getting a bad rap for things for which it may not be responsible.

I'm still skeptical of the wisdom of giving amphetamines to people who are already a bit over the edge at best, and at worst are battle traumatized vets who have been trained to kill someone with a paper clip.

Far be it for me to agree with enzo, but everything I've read the last few years shows that MDMA has long lasting positive effects on mood. In some cases they find that the effects last years (but in most people the effects last about 6 months).
MDMA does alter serotonin levels in the brain under heavy use, but I think that clinical use in a controlled setting would be safe.
The long and short of it is that they haven't been able to test this drug fully. While I doubt it's any kind of wonder drug, it might have some useful effects in some patients.
I should also point out that the MDMA they are working with is the real thing, while the MDMA that is sold on the street is almost always not.

I definitely think sociopaths should take MDMA--they should do a study on sociopaths next!!

I've often thought that MDMA (does anybody still call it "adam"?) would have been useful as a therapy for people with Asperger's Syndrome. Behavioral modification is the usual therapy for folks with A.S., but how do you "teach" empathy?
My brother has A.S., and I always wanted to offer him some MDMA. I know he would never have taken it, but I would have loved to have seen him just once without the shackles of his autistic tendencies.

Uhhh... let's just say that my empirical experience with the stuff leads to my theoretical conclusion. Ive definitely had my share of post-traumatic stress.
It's well-known that Ecstacy floods the brain with seratonin and other neurotransmitters, which in turn sets up a neurotransmitter-deprived state at a later date. Just like a see-saw.
And there's nothing worse than having your PTSD "cured" and then losing the will to live a month or two later because your brain no longer maintains adequate seratonin levels, not to mention what happens to levels of oxytocin, norepinephrine and dopamine.
Every action must have an equal and opposite reaction. That goes for brains just as it goes for the rest of matter as we know it.
Far be it from me to tell anyone else what to do with their minds and bodies. But for me, I won't be touching SSRIs, Ecstacy, or any other pysychotropic drugs (okay maybe the occasional joint) with a ten-foot pole. Too many bad experiences. "If the doors of the mind were cleansed"... I wouldn't need to use hallucinogens.
