Oh how I would love to have a coffee shop to support and have delicious drinks with friends, have meetings and a place that is 24 hours...a dream come true.

BUT a coffee shop owned by a registered sex offender~with a conviction regarding minors~this is a recipe for disaster.

Add to that being willing to have high school student interns and hosting open mic's-which often draw a younger crowd and it is a nightmare.

Not to make light of his crimes, but sex offenders need employment too.

I'd hope if there were any conditions of his parole regarding hiring or working with minors that is being met, considering his shop is near an active school officials aren't terribly worried. As someone who admittedly is not a parent but can imagine being on some day (and was a child in a dense urban neighborhood) I see that entire corner as a teaching moment on what to look out for and who to avoid.

It says he is a Tier II sex offender and must register every 180 days for 25 years.

Tier II are those other than Tier I with an offense punishable by imprisonment for more than one year and comparable to or more severe than the following federal offenses involving a minor: sex trafficking; coercion and enticement; transportation with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity; abusive sexual contact. Also includes any offense involving use of a minor in a sexual performance, solicitation of a minor to practice prostitution, or production or distribution of child pornography.

The individual you are talking about was a former coworker of a friend and from what I understand it had to do with internet and phone text messages to/from a high schooler. The mother found the emails and texts and it turned into one of those Dateline type stings. I'm not even sure if they even met face to face.
