Did anyone catch the Transit Oriented Development/suburban sprawl show last night on PBS? I caught only about 15 minutes of it, but it seemed interesting. They seemed to be focusing their attention on growing denser suburbs with links to rail transit.

I really think Columbus is set up well for this type of rail network. Most of the suburbs surrounding Columbus have slightly denser/mixed-use centers that could be served with rail, while leaving most of the rest of the suburb in-tact and served by bus lines feeding to the transit centers.

Caught a few minutes of the show. Pretty decent discussion on rail/transit-based communities. A couple of the communities they looked at were Arlington, VA and Shaker Heights, near Cleveland. The Arlington discussion was interesting to me; they discussed how they were able to build mixed use buildings in and around the Metro lines that end in Reston. A decent idea the show provided was the creation of '20-minute' communities. That is, a person being able to walk or ride the transit system and be able to shop, eat, exercise, entertain, and live within a 20 minute walk or ride in their communities....Do you think that would work here?

I watched the whole show and it was a pretty wide range of topics from politics to history to development patterns. I like how in Shaker Heights, an original bedroom community brought about by streetcars long ago, still uses the same rail line to move people about. Residents realized the value in it after all these years and are still glad to have it.

As for the 20 minute community, I think that can be implemented and successful in any city. It's the mindset of suburbia that needs to be changed in order to allow for more dense develepment, which many people in suburban communities are against. Not everyone should HAVE to burn a gallon of gas to buy a gallon of milk. That one statement hits the nail on the head.
