I saw one of the two falcon fledglings die this afternoon. It was terrible. I was out for a walk and I was heading back to the entrance of the Rhodes Tower (heading west on the sidewalk) when a large object fell out of the sky and hit the concrete about 20 feet in front of me. I ran up and saw that it was a peregrine falcon. It had a few tufts of white down on it so I assume it was one of the fledglings.
I saw it blink once and I looked it over (without touching it or getting close) next time I looked at its face it was no longer blinking. I told passersby to get building security. I left after security arrived. They said that they had contacted the Department of Natural Resources.
I am very sad. Only two eggs hatched this year. I have been following their progress all spring long.
