INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - A family filed a lawsuit against the Mattel toy company after a 9-year-old girl swallowed magnets from one of the company's recently recalled toys.
Paige Kostrzewski needed surgery in 2005 after she swallowed magnets from a Polly Pockets play set, 10TV News reported.

The set was one of several different products recalled by Mattel earlier this week.
The Kostrzewski family said that after Paige swallowed the magnets, they attached to the inside of her intestine.
According to doctors who operated on Kostrzewski, if the girl would have waited a few more days to get the surgery, she may have died, 10TV News reported.
The Kostrzewski family later filed a lawsuit against Mattel to help pay for the girl's $35,000 medical bill, 10TV News reported.
Mattel later settled with the family for an undisclosed amount.
Misty May, Kostrzewski's mother, said her daughter is recovering from the ordeal.
"I'm happy it's off the market, but I'm not happy it took so long," May said. "No one should have to go through that over a toy.
Kostrzewski was one of three children nationwide who swallowed two or more magnets.
