So, when December/January roll around everyone starts making up their top 10 lists of various things. One of my favorite to read is always the top 10 albums of the year list, because invariably people with tastes other than my own have things they really like and the top 10 list is a good way to check out things that I might have missed.
But the downside, is with all those lists, sometimes I just don't have time to get to everything. And a lot of times, people forget albums that came out early in the year, not on purpose, but simply because it's been a long time since the release.
So, I thought that now that we're halfway through 2008, it'd be worthwhile to compile a half list, of the top 5 albums of the year thus far. (In the interest of highlighting good music feel free to add any albums that you're looking forward to in the 2nd half too.)
My list, in no particular order:
Firewater -- The Golden Hour
The Black Keys -- Attack & Release
Times New Viking -- Rip it Off
Montonix -- Body Language EP
The Sun -- Don't Let Your Baby Have all the Fun (available on CD-R at shows, not sure about wider distribution at this point)
Honorable mentions go to:
The Sword -- Gods of the Earth
Tapes 'n Tapes -- Walk it Off

I'll almost certainly be at the show. One of my friends is a huge Silver Jews fan. Incidentally, I believe that Monotonix first gained greater attention when they opened for the Silver Jews. (Monotonix is playing this weekend at Skylab. I'm REALLY upset that I'll be out of town for the show).

I've gotta admit that I have not heard of a lot of these bands. I mean, why isn't Coldplay at the top of the list??? (I kid!!) But really, if I went with the top 5 of 2008 (so far), I would have only 7 albums. So without having to make many tough decisions, here is my list:
1. The Dodos - Visiter
2. Pete and the Pirates - Little Death
3. Frightened Rabbit - The Midnight Organ Fight
4. The Weepies - Hideaway
5. Beach House - Devotion
The two cut off the list:
Nine Inch Nails - Ghosts I-IV
Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
And I would say Nine Inch Nails would be close to dead last. Oh and I just realized that I have an album by Fuck Buttons that I don't really like that much either.

good lord! lookout mountain, lookout sea? did you listen to this album??? I'll be the first to stand about and declare my love for the silver jews, but this album was just awful. it took me 5 attempts before I could actually force myself to listen to the entire album all the way through, and trust me, i really have nothing better to do. PARTY BARGE???? candy jail? give me a freaking break. the first half of the album was pretty good, and can appreciate simple/silly silver jews lyrics, but jesus this just went too far.
did like the visiter album despite the spelling, as well as tapes 'n tapes, but otherwise i'm really behind on listening to new albums.

In Rainbows was released in 2007. It was made available as a download at that time and as a disc box. in 08 I believe it was released as a plain old CD and regular LP.

Okay, my list has to be changed, as I've just found undeniably my favorite album of 2008.
M83: Saturdays = Youth
I have no idea how I slept on this, but thank god I popped it in while driving around this weekend. I kept wondering if I'd find a filler track where I wanted to hit the track skip button, but no, the first 5-6 songs were so amazingly good I was shocked.
Kim & Jessie might be my favorite track of 2008. A lot of the album reminds me of 80's Tears for Fears, Cocteau Twins, The Cure, Kate Bush, etc. Every song is quite different, but it's all cohesive.
Highlights are Kim & Jessie, Graveyard Girl, Couleurs, Skin of the Night, You Appearing.
Blown away.

Oh, Mister Shifter, how I love thee!!!! Downloading now. That scene in Graveyard Girl where she's sitting there drumming, I immediately thought about Watts and how it has been way too long since I've watched Some Kind of Wonderful :)
