Well, it's about that time again. Time to catch up on all the awesome music that we might have missed out on over the past year. I'm always amazed, no matter how much overlap there might be between some people's lists, by and large, everyone will pick out at least a few albums that others missed.

So, here's my top 10:

Hrm. I rarely buy/download full albums anymore. Usually just individual songs. Would have to really take a hard look at my tunes to figure out if there's any albums I'd rank from this year...

Unfortunately, the mp3 era means that I rarely listen to new music an album at a time.

However, here are the top 15 songs I listened to that were released this year.

1. Knockin'- Carolina Chocolate Drops & Luminescent Orchestrii
Afro-bluegrass superstars the Carolina Chocolate Drops brought a whole new level of sexy to neo-gypsy collective the Luminescent Orchestrii's erotic folk song.
2. Pumped Up Kicks - Foster the People
The best sing-along feel good song about mass murder this year.
3. Will Do - TV On the Radio
I've always found TOtR hard to love, but not this tightly controlled piece of amazing.
4. Grenade - Delilah
I was a big fan of eventual winner "Pentatonix", but this remains my single favorite performance of "The Sing Off".
5. Sail - AWOLNATION
Blame it on my ADD, baby.
6. Bizness - Tune-Yards
I learned about this one here on CU.
7. Who Knows Who? - Orgone
Retro goodness
8. Sydney (I'll Come Running) Brett Dennen
Did Sydney do it? And what was it? A more up-tempo number from the red-headed troubadour.
9. Big Ups - The Wet Darlings
I love this local hit.
10. Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) Arcade Fire
Yeah, I hate the suburbs too.
11. Se Lavi- The Creole Choir Of Cuba
Some seriously funky a capella
12. Tout le Monde - Carla Bruni
I love Michelle O, but can she sing like France's first lady?
13. The Ghost Inside - Broken Bells
I finally warmed up to this spooky collaboration by two of my favorite artists.
14. I Walked - Sufjan Stevens
I'm no Sufjan fan --but this song is great.
15. Paradise Coldplay
I'm a little embarrassed to put a Coldplay song on my list --but there it is.

Not to be a stickler, but Sufjan Stevens, Foster The People, Broken Bells, The Arcade Fire are all albums/singles from 2010. Solid selections nonetheless :)

I don't think I can count a full 10 this year. Not that there was not a lot of good albums, but my record budget was severely dropped due to major stereo room upgrades. I only do albums, artists do not exists, only albums, first listens are always in full, uninterrupted with no distractions.

In no particular order:

Black Angels - PHOSGENE NIGHTMARE 10"
The Black Belles - S/T
The White Stripes - Live in Mississippi LP
Black Keys - El Camino
Justin Townes Earl - Harlem River Blues (the title track is easily my favorite song of the year)

That's all that comes to mind, so that's it.

Is this one of those lists where people list the most obscure bands they know, and try to one up each other by naming no name bands? With the exception of Jay-z, lil wayne, radiohead, and lady gaga I have not heard of a single person on this list.

Are you trying to make a virtue of ignorance? As was stated earlier in the thread, part of the idea is to help people discover music they haven't heard yet. It isn't anyone else's fault but yours if you've heard only the most mainstream, popular music anyone mentioned.

Plus, groups like "The Roots", "The White Stripes", "My Morning Jacket" and "Florence and the Machine" are anything but obscure or unknown.
