Toledo casino will be built in 2 1/2 years, company says

Penn National Gaming vowed yesterday that a casino will rise on the banks of the Maumee River after voters broke a two-decade logjam to support Las Vegas-style gambling in Ohio.

"We will have Hollywood Casino Toledo in two to two-and-a-half years," said Tim Wilmott, the Pennsylvania-based corporation's president. He made the statement as he stood with Mayor Carty Finkbeiner on the reclaimed former industrial site that is to be the home of Toledo's casino.

Does Toledo also have an area called 'The Arena District' or is this guy confused about which city they are 'Bullish' on?

Eric Schippers of Penn National is asked 'Why Toledo?' he says..we are bullish on Toledo, there is a lot of excitement happening Downtown within the 'Arena District' (about 4:13 min)

Yes, there is an arena district in Toledo around the arena that was just completed this year downtown.

Thanks for the details, does sound like the Lucas County Arena has a lot going for it and hopes to go for LEED certification for energy efficiency. Glad to see that.

However, I cannot find any online references to that area in Toledo being called the 'Arena District' if someone has that reference I'd love to see it.

You're really stretching. Toledo may not have the penchant for officially naming every 6 blocks a separate "district" that Columbus does, but calling the area around a brand new arena an "arena district" is hardly a mistake. The guy knew what he was referencing, even if you didn't and wish he was wrong.

What does it matter, really? If it's called that, it was probably named recently. The Arena just opened in September/October.

They built a baseball park there a few years ago that is hands down the best I've ever been too (including Huntington Park). The casino should be another nice edition for that part of town.

Toledo has a district like the Arena district.it is called the Warehouse district.
Around 15 years ago,some investors redid the old Edison hotel and it is called the Maumee Bay Brewing co.
this hotel had some serious history from the bootlegging days,lots of gangsters stayed there.Toledo was a main route from Canada for bootlegging liquor back then.
i was dating the controller for the place at the time.it was an awesome restaurant to go to,good food,awesome pale ale
i don't know if it is still open,i havent been up there in a few years.
they do some outdoor concerts during the summer right on the river.i forgot what the concert series was called,i saw Bad Company last time i was up there

if they built a casino,i am sure this is the area they are looking at.

i didnt say it was,i was just stating that there are districts in Toledo.

this is what the story says:
Toledo's casino, as specified in the voter-approved constitutional amendment, would be built on 44 riverfront acres in East Toledo between Rossford and I-75.

Penn National Gaming, Inc. announced Dec. 30 that it purchased 44-acres of land at 1968 Miami St. for the proposed Hollywood Casino Toledo.

Ã¢â‚¬Å“Closing on the property moves us a major step closer to making Hollywood Casino Toledo a reality,Ã¢â‚¬Â said Eric Schippers, senior vice president of Penn National. Ã¢â‚¬Å“WeÃ¢â‚¬â„¢re eager to move forward and excited that this project will bring thousands of construction and permanent jobs to the Toledo area, as well as tens of millions of dollars for the city of Toledo as well as all of the counties and school districts in Northwest Ohio.Ã¢â‚¬Â

The proposed casino will cost $250 million and is expected to open in the second half of 2012. Ohio authorized the gaming in Toledo with the successful passing of Issue 3.

The location is only 2.5 miles south of the Amtrak train station, I wonder if they will do a transportation tie in?

TOLEDO -- In a city that's fiercely proud of its art museum, zoo and Mud Hens, leaders have squeezed a new picture onto the tourism brochures.

Toledo's casino won't open until late 2012 -- ground won't be broken until late this year -- but it's already part of the pitch to convention organizers and business-meeting planners.

Toledo casino owner commits funds to promote local tourism
BLADE STAFF

Casino operator-owner Penn National Gaming Inc., the company that plans to build a casino in Toledo by 2012, yesterday said it has pledged to provide $300,000 over 10 years to promote local tourism.

It will provide nearly $90,000 of the amount almost immediately.
