Today's Grateful Dead?

My boss and I were discussing the upcoming Flaming Lips show, we're both big fans but neither really wanna shell out the cash to see them live again, but, we were also discussing the on-stage antic of asking a veteran fan to come on stage to dress as a rabbit and run around a bit. This brought, somehow, the Grateful Dead into the discussion and how interesting their stage performances were during their hay-day.

To most, Phish has long been THE band associated with today's hippies yet isnt very interesting on stage, in my opinion, but does have the sound of a modern Grateful Dead.

My question: between these 2 bands, not taking anything away from the loser, would you classify as today's Grateful Dead?

Honestly, neither can touch what the Grateful Dead were. I can't stand Phish, I always viewed them as a ripoff of the GD, only marketed toward a more mainstream crowd. the GD was basically a travelling party from city to city, the band and the fans all toured as one. Phish I thought kinda picked up that a little, I didn't know the FL had traveling fans.

the flaming lips live show is more comparable to pink floyd than the dead. only pink floyd had good music to go along with their theatrics.

why would anyone even think that? maybe i've somehow missed them, but i have some dvds and have watched numerous shows online and i've never seen any dead live shows where they do anything but stand there and play and later when they could afford it, have cool lights and graphics...which was the exact same thing every other psychedelic band was doing back then and is the same thing psychedelic bands from phish to ekoostik hookah to galactic to mgmt does today.

and it's not even that what the dead did was original either. the whole traveling music scene has been around with bluegrass for a much longer time. that's how garcia met grisman before the dead even existed, playing in the parking lot at a festival. 60's hippies were really all just wanna-be hillbillies right down to the style of dance.

i'm pretty sure that the traveling music scene had as much to do with the traveling party scene and the assurance that you could score drugs in the parking lot as it did with the music. There will forever be a chicken-and-egg question about whether the band created the fans/scene or vica versa, but neither would have gotten so big without the weed/acid/etc.

I wouldn't compare the Flaming Lips to the Dead, maybe Phish, and I do not care for them, and heard more than enough Dead from an old roommate who her and her friends were all dead heads. Kept bugging me about going to Hookah and Dark Star, and I bugged them about playing something from my huge music collection to replace the Dead CD they kept playing over, and over, and over and over, etc. etc.

It's no secret that phish has a huge following that travels with them. I mean, they did host a huge festival for the new millennium with close to 100K people. oh, and rolling around in a hamster ball is dumb. It was probably cool the first couple of times they did it but the novelty wears off when they do it every show.

I like early Dead ('75 is about my cut-off for them), and I love The Flaming Lips even more. Don't think the crowd, stage show or music have one thing in common.

Today's Dead? There isn't one. It sure as fuck isn't Phish!

If you really want to experience the Dead, you need to get to a Dark Star Orchestra show. Plan on heading to Pittsburgh one, but they play Newport fairly often as well. The music is almost identical, and I saw many many shows of the real thing, and the scene is like a mini version of the real thing as well.

Worth a trip for sure.

I missed the Flaming Lips this time around. I'd like to see them but still haven't.. I'd not really compare the two though. FL is a quirky art-rock band that made it, and GD was a Folk/Psychedelic band that made it..

As for the Grateful Dead, I've gone to see them twice.. once in 89 and once in 92, but I'm pretty much over it.. Like armyoflarry, I'm partial to their pre-75 output, mainly for the heavy folk influence. Beyond that they were a decently fun live show, but the real scene was in the parking lot...

Uh yeah, I guess we can just agree to disagree here.. I likes me some Floyd, but pretty much anything they've touched since the late 70s has sucked. OTOH, I like pretty much everything FL have done since the start of their career.. Probably because they also have done a good job reinventing themselves every few albums.. Then again my favourite Pink Floyd album is Muddle..

I'm a big fan of both, moreso Phish.. neither is today's grateful dead.

It's certainly not the lips. Their concerts are nothing like what I have seen on video/recordings of old grateful dead shows, or what The Dead or Phil and Friends shows are like today. As far as I know the lips don't have legions of fans following them around.

Phish has the aspect of fans following them around/travelling long distances to see them. The atmosphere is slightly similar.. maybe to an unfamiliar ear the music is similar.

I'm curious what made you compare the flaming lips stage show to the dead? They are very different.

this makes me miss the old days. i can enjoy a good phish show, and the scene surrounding it, but it doesn't carry the same dignity. the dead had something all their own.
