This sucks! What will I do without my South Park and John Stewart? There is a bar flashing on my screen now saying, "this channel will no longer be available after Wednesday. I guess it's WOW time???
LOS ANGELES - Media giant Viacom Inc. is threatening to pull MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon and 16 other channels from Time Warner Cable Inc. if a new carriage fee deal is not agreed upon by midnight Wednesday.

TDS & Colbert are on Hulu the next day. Very quick.
Time to kill the cable all together. I think the only thing that would bring me back would be a la carte options for channel selection. And even then I probably wouldn't go back. :P

This is a crazy development. It's hard not to see cable companies getting out of the cable tv business in a few years. Little by little, they're pissing off their customers by bundling more stations, raising prices, and reducing service. All the while, more quality content is hitting the web.
I was just told by my cable company that it would cost me $14/month to get the channel package with Bravo. All I wanted to see is Top Chef, so I just bought the season pass on iTunes for $25. In another year, I'm hoping that the hardware will get better and cheaper for streaming shows to my TV. At that point, it's lights out for the cable bill.

+1. A la carte would get me on board. Wasting money subscribing to channels I never watch or care about is the biggest problem i have with cable tv as is.

Not quite the cheapest solution, but extremely easy to set up and very flexible as far as watching TV, Movies, Internet Surfing, and light gaming:

and if you want to throw some added functionality in the mix:

I'm loving the AppleTV. If your buying shows on iTunes already, then this is a good option.

+2. My RR is very reliable but with cable TV, T-W is tricky and they lie. I had to 'upgrade' my account to get C-SPAN 2 so I could watch Booknotes and Brian Lamb, but suddenly Channel 14 became Travel Channel, which previously had been Channel 58 (love Bourdain), and C-SPAN 2 was gone! I called and discussed this with their dopey CSRs and was deciding what to do when I accidentally found C-SPAN 2 on Channel 94, which I didn't even know I got. God I hate T-W, I would love to fire them.

Looks like Spike TV is on the chopping block too, which means missing the best commercials EVER:

This makes me SO glad we switched to WOW ages ago. I must have my trashy reality shows on VH1 and my MXC on Spike!

of course the flip side of that, TW just got Sci Fi HD this week, just in time for the new Battlestar Galactica...and WoW still doesn't :(

seriously. WTF is up with THAT? They have FOX NEWS HD, but not SCIFI? That burns my bacon every time I look at the TV listing.

Yep, there's about 14 ridiculous HD channels, they FINALLY added FX like 2 months ago. The PPV HD options are also atrocious, and I was really pissed after buying my 1080p monitor that nothing is actually offered in 1080p.

Are you able to switch companies? Like to AT&T UVERSE or one of the dish providers instead? Heck, sometimes even threatening to switch is enough to get a prolonged discount or some free channels.
We have Insight in our area and while it's definitely not perfect, I'm pretty happy with it -- especially with their recent (~1.5 mos or so) upgrade to include a lot more free HD channels, like USA, Sci-Fi, History Channel, etc.
I looked into switching to U-Verse, as some friends have had good experiences with that, but it would've been about the same price for not really any improvement/difference... *shrug*

These channels will almost certainly not be lost forever. Pulling them from the active lineup is pretty much the only leverage the cable company has, and they'll work out a solution sooner than later.
It's in both TWC's and MTV Networks' best interests to have the channels in the lineup.

I've had WOW almost since it was first available, back when it was Americast (I think that was 1999 or 2000). It's really good, I like it much better than Time Warner.

WOW is awesome. total opposite of the evil giant.
