Yeah, that happened in Moraine, Ohio, which is hauntingly close to Moron, Ohio, so...

A moraine has a lot more intelligence than a moron :)

That was almost a terminal moraine.

See, now for THIS I'd almost have to rethink death panels.

Lord knows I never did anything stupid when I was a kid.
PS- all you parents and future parents: boys are gonna play with fire. fact.

Ah... and there you have it in the article.... YouTube is partially to blame according to the mother. Lawsuit to be filed soon I'm sure.

lol...yep, its Youtube. I'm astonished I survived my childhood after watching dozens of episodes of The Fall Guy.

It's true I am going through this right now and it's the most stressful thing I have dealt with as a parent to date I think. My boy is only 7 he knows fire is bad but there is something else going on that is causing him to keep at it. Personally I don’t' want to burn to death on my sleep or see anyone hurt. But it scares the shit out of me. I have no lighters in the house and no joke he comes acrossed them like it's a divine sign to burn him self some sense. uuuggghhhh
anyway we have enrolled him in a few fire safety courses and prevention with the Columbus fire division so we can get to the bottom of this very real and scary danger.Posted 2 years ago # -
I know I've mentioned this before, but I'll still never forget sitting around a fire with a bunch of dudes, and
ME: Oh great, now you are going to regale me with 4,000 stories of all the stuff you blew up or burned, because buys like burning stuff.
DUDES: No way, man, what a stereotype. Except for this one time? It was really awesome...
FAST FORWARD FOUR HOURS
DUDES: ... and then the fourth time we tried that, we ended up burning off the side of Justin's mom's hair salon, it made these kick ass purple sparks, and it smelled like burning balloons everywhere, I guess because it WAS burning balloons, and...

INFINITYLOL!
Also, for boys of any age, the various instructions for making alcohol burning stoves from soda cans are very fun.
If anyone asks, you're making camping equipment from recycled materials. See? It's green. Must be ok.

So... boys like burning stuff. What can we do about it.
Fire safety courses are cool, of course, but.... they like to PLAY with fire.
(Yes, I am being somewhat sexist, so let me revise... the masculine in all of us likes to play with fire, IMO)
I never thought I'd say this, but perhaps some archery, hunting, or firearms lessons? Something designed to take this wanton burn-urge and focus it appropriately and honorably.

A few years ago, In Richmond IIRC, some people blew up a boat in their driveway. They were going to sell it, but they didn't want to give up the gas in the tank, so they decided to suck it out with a shop vac. Boom.

I've no kids, so no clue really... but some of the most fun training I had were various shipboard firefighting courses.
Firearms might work; obviously safety is paramount and the kid has to be able to handle firearms both physically and emotionally.

We actually did that when I was a kid (the firemen, not the guns), and believe it or not, I think Smokey the Bear was effective (I remember it 30 years later or so, for whatever that's worth). We also had Safety Town, which I think did a bunch of fire safety training.

sounds like Boy Scouts. or Indian Chiefs, or whatever is available to you.
I was going to suggest taking him camping, where fire is kind of part of the ritual and can be demystified, and played with to an extent, in a controlled and supervised environment.
I think you're doing the right thing with the education and stuff, but I also really think a certain amount of exposure and allowed experimentaion is going to be a lot more effective at both getting it out of his system and teaching safe boundaries than an 'abstinence only' program.
just like a zillion other things, knowing how to deal with it responsibly is probably better than the temptation and incompetance associated with ignorance.

Just thinking though... did you make a home-made fire extinguisher as a kid? Something like this:

or this:
