My cherished Motobecane bicycle was stolen this weekend from a bike rack in front of Arps Hall on the OSU campus.
Though I'm devastated, I must move on. :cry:
Anyone have a bike they'd like to sell or know of a good place to get a decently priced road bike?

Speaking from when I was around 16, we would grab bikes, ride them for a day, and then we had a friend, who would always buy the bikes, for maybe 15 or 20 dollars. Depending on teh type of bike he would either sell them as is, or take parts from 20 different bikes and make a new bike. The basement in this mother's house would have like 30 bikes in it at a time, it looked like a bike shop. I don't know if the bikes we got were expensive or not, they were mostly bmx and mountain bikes.

I had a friend like this quite a few years back.
She'd make art projects out of them as well.

Yeah. I tried all the usual places, but I can never find what I'm looking for when it comes to bikes on craigslist.

There are a lot of hoops for that usually. Someone can elaborate if I miss the details BUT:
Usually have to have the police report, register within the week or two you bought the lock for the insurance, be able to prove it was locked properly. At that point, it is usually at their discretion if they will pay out.
Best bet for a campus bike is two fold: go to Third Hand, Once Ridden, Craigslist or the classifieds and find the cheapest ride that is comfortable. Make sure the lock you buy for it is worth at least 2-3 times more.
Second, park and lock the bike next to the expensive one the freshman brought from home that is locked by the frame with a wall mart cable lock.

Speaking of locking up bikes. I enjoy riding and do it as much as possible, just around town. I am paranoid, unreasonably, about my bike getting stolen. What is the best way to prevent theft? I need a lesson in how to quickly identify the best place and most secure way to lock up and I would ride three times as much.

I have a U-lock. Basically I always put the u lock through the back wheel and frame and lock to the rack. I have a cable the goes through the front wheel and frame and gets locked by the U-lock. I have never had an issue (knock on wood) around campus or elsewhere.

It looks identical to the one in the picture, except for the white grips, and my wheels don't have the red whitewash on them.

My housemate's wheels were stolen by the Architecture building Tuesday night, then he found them on Craig's List like an hour later (well, he's pretty sure they're his wheels, he hasn't looked at them yet). This all makes me sick. I wish people could donate to B-1 for a "I got my shit stolen" grievance fund. Wouldn't that be great?
I have a Motobecane too (frosty pink), and I would throw up if she got stolen.

Umm, so you're admitting to being a bicycle theif? Dude, you admitted to getting out of a DUI on the other thread and talk about hitting bicyclist if they inconvenience you and now this. WTF man? These aren't things to be proud of, unless we've entered bizzaro world or something.

I have found in my life that people tend to respect the truth. I would not say I am proud of some of these choices, but at the same time i do not really think I am ashamed. A lot of the choices I made I would not make the same choices now. I could tell you, I was a great kid, and helped older ladies and did community service, but I would be lying. I don't have any room in my life for people that are fake, so why would I act fake to other people?

My bike was stolen a few years ago in my neighborhood. I recovered it a few days later because I saw a kid riding it (Cannondales stick out like a sore thumb in my neighborhood!). I stopped him near his home, his father came and out and after I explained that it was mine and stolen he became hostle. I was able to prove that it was mine by removing the seat and pulling out a laminated sheet with my info on it (in the down tube) that I matched my drivers license. They could only agree to return it or I would have called the police, since I had reported it stolen a few days before. I got my bike back and since then have put my id info with a photo of me in a laminated sheet of paper in the downtube of all my bikes as an added means to help identfy it.

I believe he stole other people's stuff, he sounds like that sort. But it's hard to believe he got a DUI busted down to, as he asserted, a 'jaywalking ticket.' Reckless Op, maybe. A muffler offense or left of center, slight possibility. But muni court prosecutors don't knock DUIs down to pedestrian offenses, they use moving violations.
