Its all a Numbers game and politics. Two months from now, they will release "Revised" figures, which show the rate much higher.
Unemployment rates are calculated by looking at those who are actively looking for work. So its the # of unemployed in relation to the size of the labor market actively seeking employment.
So, no, its not bs, and it wouldn't surprise me to see the rate drop even with a small employment gain.....
Its not a perfect measure, but I'm not sure of what would be better...
By comparison all of Canada, which is 1/10 the size of the US population added 69,000 jobs last month and their unemployment rate went up.
Everyone sensible* recognizes that the January numbers are messed up. (I first saw comment on these from a WaPo article linked on Fb by Jennifer Brunner who I suspect is not in tune w/ Antonio.) The two numbers are not measured the same way. Trends are what really matter and not really any credence should be given to what is likely an anomaly.
* Which makes it particularly cynical and deceptive politics that Boehner made a shot at Obama based on the the job cxn numbers.
A.
If the talking heads in DC and at the Federal Reserve use these bogus stats to rely on in their policy decisions were f***ed.
3.9 Million lost their unemployment benefits in 2010.
They don't count anymore, that's a great way to lower the number.
