On the hook to deliver a televised statewide address before a joint session of the General Assembly at noon Tuesday, John Kasich went into the weekend unsure of what he would say in perhaps the biggest speech of his fledgling governorship.

Gov. Kasich is working without a net today -- no Teleprompters and, his staff says, no formally prepared speech. This is a first as far back as anyone around here can remember. Former Gov. Ted Strickland didn't like to hand out copies of his speech prior to delivery, because he felt it forced everyone to actually pay attention to what he said. But he did have a speech, and Teleprompters to read from. No doubt everyone will in the chamber will pay close attention to Kasich today, particularly when/if he lays out any of his plans for the new two-year budget, which he will introduce one week from today.

Yeah. All he proved is that he should use a written speech and probably teleprompters.

Overall, politically, he did a great job of staying away from dicey issues and coming across as convivial and reasonable - especially given there was no teleprompters or script. Hoping next week we don't see otherwise? I liked his comment on that we can't tax our way out of the budget, but we can't cut our way out either. I thought his Bono name dropping was a bit gaudy in comparing malaria in Africa to prescription drug abuse.

I personally don't like the talk of drilling in Lake Erie or State Parks - especially seeing that most of Ohio land (state forests) is already open to hydro-fracing. I also think his quote of, "the state shouldn't be shoving stuff down the throat of local governments," is going to come back and bite him. We need some serious local government reform in Ohio.

Blaring omission - any real specifics of how he is going to save 8 billion come next week? Overall, much better than I was expecting.

no need for random negativity, since he's confirmed he's keeping a tax cut and going to balance a budget...in a week...that's 8 billion bucks in the hole, and still hasn't outlined a single cut that will begin to even make a tiny dent in that deficit.

I also like his bit on that we need better college technical preparation. I would love to see our secondary educational system to become closer to Germany's in the college tech curriculum and preparing college tech for the needed jobs. It will be interesting on how this comes to fruition.
