Press Release:
FIVE ARTISTS. FIVE TANKS. ONE UNIFYING IDEA.
The Digital Immigrants, a Columbus-based art collective known for unique mixed-media works and commissions, announces a one-of-a-kind auction for five one-of-kind sculptures – The Oxygen Auction.
Building on their experiences as artists and professional creatives, David Denniston, Brianne DeRolph, Andrew Lundberg, Nathaniel Underwood and Brad White used identical antique oxygen tanks from World War II-era planes to create five different works of art with five unique interpretations.
The five works will be exhibited at Voodoo Denim Lounge, 780 N. High St. in Columbus, during the October 1, Short North Gallery Hop. But unlike most of the art on display at the Gallery Hop, the five works will not be sold through a gallery. Instead, the Digital Immigrants will sell their pieces through an online auction at http://www.diauction.com. Bidding for each piece begins at $100, and there is no reserve. The auction begins at midnight, Saturday, October 1, and runs through 11:59 p.m., Wednesday, November 30. Half the proceeds from each piece will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project.
“Because of the source material, these five pieces have a unifying theme of oxygen, but each represents the individual artist’s vision,” said Lundberg. “At the same time, we felt that because the source material was originally used by veterans during World War II, we should donate 50 cents of every dollar to a foundation that supports veterans returning from today’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.”
All five sculptures were created from the same source material – high-altitude oxygen tanks from World War II-era B-17 bombers. Lundberg found the first tank while scouring a Columbus scrap yard for interesting source material. After researching the tank’s origins, he discovered it was used as an oxygen tank for the flight crew of a B-17 Flying Fortress during high-altitude bombing runs over Europe and the Pacific during World War II. Four more tanks were subsequently acquired, leading to the Oxygen Auction.
Each Digital Immigrants artist created an individual interpretation on the source material and oxygen theme. David Denniston produced “Intake,” Brianne DeRolph created “Rationizer,” Andrew Lundberg formed “Rentry,” Nathaniel Underwood made “Unnamed,” and Brad White created “Discotanque.”
