The Lake Erie Islands are GREAT this time of year.

They are past the high season up there, the kids are heading back to school but the weather is warm enough to still enjoy the water.
Went up to the lake recently and had a really good time.

We stayed in Marblehead, a cool little lake side town with shops and the like and the Surf Motel

Marblehead is also home to the Marblehead Lighthouse

And right across the lake from Cedar Point.

We took our bikes and took the ferries over to the Islands.

Kelley's Island was probably our favorite.

Nice beaches

The Glacier Grooves alone were worth the trip.

We also took the pup!

Great Sunset.

My wife and I took our two daughters (2 & 4) on their first trip to Lake Erie this weekend. We went over to East Harbor State Park to the beach and swam. East Harbor Beach very child friendly because it is shallow and has a very, very, very mild slope and beaker walls.

Then we headed over to Marblehead Lighthouse. We were fortunate because they were doing tours of the lighthouse and were able to climb it and look out over the lake, islands, Sandusky, and Cedar Point. Plus, the museum at the keepers house was really neat with some interesting history about the local area and limestone quarry.

We finished the day in Port Clinton eating walleye and perch at the Jolly Pirate. Oh, oh and we stopped at Cheesehaven for some smoked cheese.

It was a nice day-trip and fun to take my girls since I have been going to the lake since I was 2 (I'll be 30 in November). At one point my father even had a wooden Lyman boat (built in Sandusky) we would take to the islands. I remember going to the original Lonz Winery before the infamous deck collapse.

I visited last year and enjoyed it, but (correct me if my memory's wrong) they charged us 7 dollars per bike to put them on the ferry. To be clear, we paid the per person rate PLUS seven dollars per bike on the ferry. Outrageous.

Wow - I was just visiting Lake Erie for the first time this weekend as well - camping! We stayed at the KOA in Westfield, NY - 4.5 hours from here, so very easy trip. We chose the "primitive" campsite side, which was the way to go - fully tree'd, creek running behind the site, really private & nice. The couple that runs the KOA are very nice and *very* helpful - they deliver the wood, right to the site. It's across the street from the little Ottoway Park, which borders the lake (although it isn't really accessible). Ah-may-zing sunset.

Nice, Porky. Great pics and write-up. Kelly's Island IS nice (remind me to tell you about my experiece there...). Tonight I'm spending my second night with the boys (4&10) in Sandusky. We are all beat ('cept my brother; he's at the hotel's "Cabana Poolside Bar").

You should also visit South Bass Island where Put-in-Bay is located and visit Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial (47" taller than the Statue of Liberty). Unfortunately, you cannot go up into the memorial right now. However, when the park service reopens it, the views are AMAZING.

Yes! We camp at East Harbor State Park for Labor Day every year and visit one of the islands most years. Even during the holiday, the crowds aren't bad. Also in the area is Magee Marsh, an important migratory bird destination.

Close to Columbus: Weekend Trip to Sandusky

Since it had been awhile since we have visited the beauty of Lake Erie, we decided to take a short weekend trip with a couple of friends. Driving up Route 4 can be a bit of a sad drive, we passed so many abandoned buildings, buildings starting to – or completely caved in, towns that have been mostly shuttered up and many graveyards. But when you get to the northern part of Ohio, it doesn’t look to have been hit as hard by economic issues and there are many fun things to do. The lake is very pretty also and it makes for a nice getaway.
