2 films?
I wonder how they're going to break it up? It's been awhile since I read it -- I remember it's basically a series of events on the quest that could be fairly episodic, but I don't know that there would be a clear dividing point for the first movie to stand on it's own...

The two “Hobbit†films – “The Hobbit†and its sequel – are scheduled to be shot simultaneously, with pre-production beginning as soon as possible. Principal photography is tentatively set for a 2009 start, with the intention of “The Hobbit†release slated for 2010 and its sequel the following year, in 2011.

I am confused by this too. There's a sequel? Only thing I can think is maybe the first film would go up to the part where they defeat the dragon, the the second is about the battle of the 5 armies..
no idea.
BTW Peter Jackson is producing, not directing. From IMDB
Why doesn't Peter Jackson just direct it?
EditHistoryDelete
Peter Jackson started a lawsuit against New Line Cinema, about profit from the "Lord of the Rings: the Fellowship of the Ring" dvd. He stated that he can't direct a movie for a company against which he has a trial running. New Line Cinema says exactly the same, they don't want Peter Jackson directing while he is suing them. They offered Jackson to stop the lawsuit and just direct the movie, but he stated: 'This is simple common sense - you cannot be in a relationship with a film studio, making a complex, expensive movie and dealing with all the pressures and responsibilities that come with the job, while an unresolved lawsuit exists.'
However, there had been signs that PJ and New Line were on speaking terms again. Ian McKellan said 19th July 2007 "I detect that there is movement and it's movement in the right direction. I'll be seeing Peter (Jackson) when we tour (New Zealand) next month. I hope it will happen." This was followed by an announcement from New Line and MGM on 18th December 2007 that Jackson's issues have been resolved, and that he and Fran Walsh will be Executive Producers for the project.

After much legal wrangling, and switching directors (back to Peter Jackson now) shooting officially began on The Hobbit a few weeks ago.
And Peter Jackson has posted an awesome 10 minute video on his Facebook page!

I watched the trailer.
like 8 times.

I expected more out of the trailer. A bit underwhelming. Really?!. No Smaug? No Spiders? No Goblin King? Probably trailor 2 6 months from now. Can't wait for the epic 5 army battle, most likely in "There and Back Again".

I had hoped for a little more, too, but keep in mind that this is just the announcement teaser, and that this is just for part 1. I'm curious to know at which point they split the book to make the two movies.

Ummmm...not to turn this in to too big of a nerdfest, but why is Galadriel in a trailer for a movie based on "The Hobbit"?

Get the Video Player I'm really skeptical about the whole 48 frames per second thing, but I will reserve judgement until I see it.

Somewhere in that story Gandalf is given the key that is used to gain entry into the Lonely Mountain....
Supposedly Legolas is in the mix as well. Wonder if they will also work in Aragorn.
Both of those would be passable, I suppose.
Just hope they don't stretch it too far for celebrity cheese sake.
Lord knows they wrote enough cheesy regrettable dialogue throughout LOTR.I still will never forgive Peter Jackson for leaving The Scouring of the Shire out of Return of the King... not to mention Bombadil left out of Fellowship...
Nerdster out.

Cast list so far... confirms they have a Necromancer character, but also looks like they are working Frodo in...?
Only disappointment is the Wood Elf King, who I always pictured as David Bowie for some reason...

I'm just lamenting Guilermo didn't shoot this.
