Well, It's a nice upgrade from the old 8-bit version.
I am very excited to see all the costuming in this film. :D
I suspect that F Scott Fitzgerald will be spinning in his grave.
I don't know. I like the cast and its great source material, but I can't help but think of Vinnie Chase doing this in Entourage and it doesn’t sit well with me. We’ll see I guess.

Finished rereading the novel yesterday because I'll be teaching it in the fall. I'm hoping that this film will help spark interest in my students.

Two things. 1. Your students will watch the movie and pretend that they have read the book. None of them will actually read it.
2. No one under the age of, let's say, 21 is able to fully understand it anyway. You have to have lived some in order to recognize what Fitzgerald is saying.
I read it when I was in high school and got a great deal of understanding about the theme of dreams vs. reality, among other things. We're designing the unit to give a ton of background information about the era, including Langston Hughes poetry and videos from 60 Minutes about The Jazz Age.
I'm sure some students will watch the movie or track down the Robert Redford version online. It happens.

I wish I could be more constructive with my criticism, but WHY? WHY? WHY?
The 1920s deserve much better treatment than this music.
Film Review: The Great Gatsby

A Moulin Rouge spin on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s tale of decadence, longing, and the brutal carelessness of the wealthy could have been awesome. Isn’t that what we kind of expected when Rouge helmsman Baz Luhrmann signed on to direct The Great Gatsby, especially when he unveiled his hip hop and jazz soundtrack? What better way to bridge the gap between eras, to help today’s audience fathom the indulgent lifestyle of the filthy rich in the roaring Twenties?
