I'm not from Columbus, but I remember coming down here with my mom and grandma when I was young and going to a completely awesome toy store. I think it might have been near the Continent? It was the Toy Box! You passed it as you headed toward the French Market. I love that place!
That was it! Where was that in terms of today's geography?

Is it bad if I don't miss much? I mean I'm not at all hating on people who do but... places change, or at least you hope they do rather than stagnate (sup Dayton).
The trashy fun of old South Campus was fun, but I wouldn't trade it for the Gateway. City Center mall was nice, but I'm fairly sure the park will be better used. While there's nostalgia for Cooper, there's no nostalgia for walking around in that area.
And Columbus is better than ever now. The South Campus -> Short North blight district is slowly disappearing. The arts are alive in Columbus like never before with Junctionview, the SCGateway art stuff, Rivet, the OSU Urban Art Space and the increasing viability of online presence. North Campus -> Clintonville actually doesn't look like a 3rd world country. What about Liz Lessner's restaurant and all the other local owners? Victorian's is actually owned by someone who isn't letting the building fall apart around them. We still Rife's and North Market is doing better than ever.
And I'm not implying anyone was saying that the current Columbus is bad. It's just... Our city is awesome enough that while stuff has changed, stuff has been lost, I feel we've filled up the holes and then some.
Well except for Little Brothers/Staches. That's a fucking travesty, no joke.

I wish they would have focused on enhancing that small business aspect in the fix up rather than turning it into the corporate/chain yuk blah that it is today. I find the Gateway to be a bit of a travesty, honestly. Aside from that, I agree that Columbus has changed a lot in some really great ways over the last 15 years.....but there's always room for some nostalgia. ;-)

"5. The Purple Onion (I think this is what it was called--somewhere down in SN? Always used to go for breakfast with my parents...)"
Pretty sure you mean the Bermuda Onion. That place was awesome.
I miss Olentangy Village Tavern, or whatever it was called that used to be where Aladdin's in Clintonville is now. The food wasn't so great, but the ambience was fantastic.
I miss not just Stache's (obv), but also when Monkey's Retreat was right next door. The SN location is just not the same for me. Good thing we tore that building down to build a tanning salon and a tobacco store instead! (I know, Curry & Kabab is in there too, but still.)
I miss the Roxy! It was only a theater for a year or two after I moved here (1986), but it really said Cool-Ass-College-Town to me when I was young.

Funny that everyone here misses westland mall, but what about Northland?? Spats (the eatery at the main entrance) was where I had my first alcoholic drink that my sister bought for me.
I miss Lazzie Bears, not having to buy tickets for rides at the fair, seeing all streets (no matter where you lived) flooded with kids during trick or treat night, Idiot Boy Cafe, Stache's, Mean Mr. Mustards, the OLD Skully's, the weird A-Frame Candy Store on Oakland Park, buying chocovanilla swirl cones at the Woolworth's counter and shopping at Northern Lights Shopping Center (CLOWN CONE!!) before it became necessary to wear bullet-proof vests.Posted 2 years ago # -

It was in the Continent (161 and Busch Blvd) as part of all the "shoppes." You're talking about the two-story toy store with all the puzzles upstairs along the counter and all the puppets and legos downstairs, right?

I will have to weigh in on the nostalgia when I have a bit more time (curse you, work!), but it should be noted that Clown Cone is still open and is still awesome.

That's the one! When did that get torn down? Or did it?

Was that the place by Lane Avenue, on High Street, that would sometimes have a DJ playing music?

I think the Toy Box just went out of business once everything at the Continent Fizzled out. And yes, Idiot Boy was at Lane and High, next to the crazy Korean restaurant that no one knew was there! (I miss that place too)

Reeb's on Livingston ave.
The Citizen-Journal. (It will always be a mystery to me how the Dispatch managed to ruin Mike Harden's ability to write.)

(I miss that place too)Yeah, that Korean place was good. Only made it there a couple of times before it closed.
Man, I loved Idiot Boy. I was 16 or 17 when it was open; my friends and I used to go there a lot.

I worked at Idiot Boy! Do you remember the nasty Burger King across the street?

Great thread. My family moved here (NW 'burbs) when I was 7 in 1986.
-Insomnia coffee shop
-The French Market at The Continent, especially my friend's family's restaurant, Nellie's Curry Pot.
-Mt. Air swimming pool. I'd go to the Worthington Hills Country Club pool more often as a kid, but its still weird to drive by on old 315 and see condos instead of a community pool.
-Aardvark Cafe
-Having to wait in line at Karma or Camelot music to buy tickets from ticketmaster when an event went on sale.
-Anti-Fest
-When you had space to walk around at Comfest on Saturday afternoon.
-Big Fun on campus
-Taco Ninja
-Flicker's
-Little Brother's. I like The Summit, but it doesn't quite get the same caliber of acts that Stache's/Little Brother's did.
-Public Access 21 and Damon Zex's show.
-CD101's playlist in the early/mid 90s.Posted 2 years ago #
