Casino annexation complete tonight

The Columbus City Council will take the final vote tonight to annex the Hollywood Casino site to the West Side.

While the annexation worked its way through the city and county's three-month process, the city council agreed to spend up to a third of its casino tax revenues to finance the $42.5 million public purchase of Nationwide Arena from Nationwide and millions more to operate it through 2039.

Casino developer considers building hotel on West Side

Six months after breaking ground on its $400 million Hollywood Casino on the West Side, Penn National is looking to study the potential for building a hotel there.

A hotel has been discussed as an option at the site, but no specific timeframe has been given. The casino is expected to open late next year.

Uh yea they really should look into that. It’s not like we have any place for travelers to stay on the West Side. Seriously we have a knights inn in Franklinton and a ghetto Holiday inn express on West Broad near the casino. I am surprised this was not in the plan from the beginning.

I thought that was part of the appeal of the new location to Penn - to make it a one stop shop as much as possible and rake in the gambler's cash.

I imagine they need to do a little customer research to see how having so many regional casinos will determine who their customer base actually is. With four new casinos in the state of Ohio and others in neighboring states, how many people are going to be traveling to Columbus specifically to stay in the Casino Hotel? I don't know much about the gambling business, but my assumption would be that they're drawing from a more regional pool or day-trippers at the very most.

You should do some research. People stay in a hotel room to have casual sex or to go out downtown from the burbs. You pretending to not get why people would stay in a hotel when gambling at a 24 hour casino, many from out of town, seems intentionally adversarial.

I'm saying I don't see a whole lot of locals staying in a local hotel.

Coupled with the fact that there's going to be a casino in pretty much every major metro area in the near future... I don't see a lot of people from out of the metro area coming here specifically to stay at the casino overnight.

I already said that I don't know a whole lot about the gambling business, but if the casino developers are intentionally holding off awhile on a hotel to study their customer base, then it sounds like it's not a guaranteed good idea from a business sense.

Who knows though... maybe I'm wrong and there's an underserved market for places to have casual sex on the West Side.

I've heard some buzz that hotel developers have been looking at the large empty plots on the north side of W Broad (where KMart used to be & the car dealership), as well as the thrift-land buildings for potential hotel locations. Maybe they're waiting to see what happens there as well.

I am glad to hear that I hope a hotel or two gets built.
I want to add that I live local and do on occasion stay in hotels around Columbus because it’s fun and not my house.
In addition when people come in from out of town to visit I would love to have a nice hotel for them to stay at that is close instead of having to go to another end of down.

I'm not defending the Knight's Inn. However the Holiday Inn Express is now a Red Roof Inn that was recently renovated and updated. I don't know what it looks like inside, but it did look like they were working on it. So it may not be as luxurious as other hotels, but at least it's new-ish.

I think a hotel would work as it would allow people to come and make a weekend out of the casino. I don't think the casino is going to be set up Chipotle style, where they bring people in and then churn them right back out the door. They want people to come in and play for as long as possible.

When my family comes to stay, they always end up somewhere in Dublin, or down in Grove City (downtown is toooo expensive). I'd love a hotel, something nicer, nearby.

I'm also excited about the campground -- I have two different factions of family members with travel trailers, and so that's would be a great option for when they visit as well.

Nope - it's always been part of the plan that they *might* add a hotel. The only time they decisively weren't, was when they were in the Arena District.

From an economic development standpoint, I'd love to see new hotels around the casino that aren't part of the casino itself. If the West Side is to benefit, people have got to be able to circulate around the neighborhood. However, casinos are notoriously good at keeping their audiences captive.

Not putting a hotel on site was when the casino was going to be in the Arena District, but their plans changed with the move.
