BRAINBOW.

To quote the words of some guy standing behind me, Brainbow is the best band in the world to accidentally end up seeing when you're high. I've never seen them before, but I ended up catching their gig last night at the Carabar and I was blown away. They've got theis kind of psychedelic-rock, trippy thing going on, purely instrumental that takes you on a trip in your mind for each song. I saw quite a few people sitting back, with their eyes closed and just immersing themselves in the music that Brainbow was cranking out. Each song started in a lower groove, building up to a climax that shattered every other song climax that I've ever heard. Musically, they blew me away.

If you see them listed anywhere, I would highly recommend this band.

Yeah, that was the goal last night, but then my phone died and then I couldn't muster the energy to go upstairs to get the charger so I just continued to sit and watch Squidbillies and chat with Lew. Sooooo, maybe they're the best band to accidentally see when you're high AND you have people to force you out the door :(

I've seen them a few times pre-Gil Mantera in addition to a few other gigs at other spots; each time I've been thoroughly impressed and taken on a trip.

The sets I've heard in the past reminded me of John Murphy & Underworld's collaboration for the score of Sunshine; a symphony of sound drawn with a crude hand and wonderful ear.

My fave Comfest set for various reasons was the Evil Queens a couple of years ago. The Bush League All-Stars were pretty awesome last year.

Brainbow is very good, but, no vox gives me musical blue balls. Drives me cray-zay. The entire time I feel like Sam Kinison: "SAY IT! SAY IT!". It's not like jazz. It sounds like music that was written with vocals in mind and then someone took the vocals out- like someone's behind the board going, "Check it out without vocals, though. Isn't this rad?" And I'm like, "NO". Makes me bat shit cray-zay. I can't help it. Makes me wanna smash shi#$. I always wonder how good this band would be if someone got in front of it and rocked some vocals. I would settle for someone just smashing sh#$ onstage, too. It's very bizarre. I highly recommend them, but, I don't want to see them. Actually, I would like to accidentally get really high and smash sh#$ onstage for them, if they would oblige.

I actually like that they DON'T sing. It's very refreshing to me that they are willing to just play music and aren't compelled to sing over it.

Oddly enough, there are lots of vocalists who sing crap that makes me wanna smash stuff.

Jim Maneri's Flypaper with Freaky Circus People. When I first witnessed this spectacle at Comfest some moons ago, I was drawn in to the trance sounds emanating from the tent. As I worked my way to the stage, each band member had their own unique costume, churning out that hypnotic music (Jim was tight red shorts I think). And it blew me away when the freaky circus people started showing up; a guy on stilts, freaky clowns, one of those long Chinese dragons.

So much better to witness after chowing down a Comfest brownie. ;~

The tension it creates without the vocal may be better than having the vocal, but, I still want to hear it at some point. It's just me- can't help it.

It's definitely not just you. I feel the same way most of the time. I really wish Mogwai would release an album with a bunch of guest singers or something.
