This is something that we've been experimenting with among some of our "regular" students for about 2 months, and it seems to be working really well. Teen Open Art Studio....an open studio, for ages 13-18 years, where the students get to decide what they want to work on, while still having the benefit of an instructor on hand. It's turned into a fantastic way for art-school bound students to work on their portfolios, or for those who might not have the benefit of access to art supplies and materials at home. Not every parent has a supply cabinet full of lineoleum for their child to carve, or polymer clay to bake into beads, and that's where we come in.
Meeting every Monday afternoon from 3-5pm in our classroom at 400 W Rich Street, Open Art Studio offers materials for students to draw, paint, experiment with block printing, polymer clay and jewelrymaking, collage, sculpture, and more. Cost is just $10 per student, payable that day, and includes unlimited materials.
Already we've seen the class take off in unexpected ways; kids who claimed to be "bad at art" and came because an artistic friend drug them along, end up coming back because they were given the freedom to explore (and improve). More advanced students enjoy the ability to work on something each week, using materials like watercolor or oil paints, that they may not have at home...or may not have known how to use properly.
We're now opening up the classes to the general public, and registering through the end of May and June. We'll be closed on June 4th, to recover from the Columbus Arts Festival.
If you have a teen, or know a teen, who may be interested...send them our way! They can register by emailing us at ColumbusArtmobile@gmail.com.
