Press Release:
120 New Jobs Coming to Former Techneglas Site
When Techneglas closed its doors on the South Side six years ago, Mayor Michael B. Coleman pledged there would be renewed job creation effort at that site. Today Mayor Coleman forwarded legislation to City Council to provide incentives to International Technical Coating, Inc. (ITC) The company will invest $17 million and bring 120 new full-time jobs to the site. ITC is one of the largest producers of wire mesh shelving in the United States. The administration is proposing to grant a Jobs Creation Tax Credit of 65 percent for six years and a Jobs Growth Incentive of 25 percent for five years.
“This new operation will breathe new life into this important site and to the South Side community,†said Mayor Coleman. “I applaud the efforts of International Technical Coating for stepping up to create new job opportunities for our residents.â€Â
ITC was founded more than 17 years ago, has annual sales of $50 million and supplies 25 percent of the $250 million wire mesh shelving market. Currently headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, ITC is a supplier to stores such as Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Lowes, Sam’s Club, Ikea and Costco. ITC also has a distribution facility in Dayton, Ohio. In an effort to remain competitive and provide quality service, the company will expand its product line to include heavy duty wire mesh fencing that will replace chain-link fencing.
“Council increased the city’s investment in our economic development division to help our team attract new businesses to Columbus, and that investment is paying off,†said Councilmember Andrew J. Ginther, chair of the Finance and Economic Development committee. “ITC is not only bringing much needed jobs to Columbus, but is returning a Brownfield to productive use and promoting further economic development in the area.â€Â
ITC will be located at 707 Jenkins Avenue, where the 48-acreTechneglas site once served as one of Columbus’ major manufacturing employers for over 60 years until it closed its doors in August 2004. The site is now called TechSouth. The one million square feet of industrial and office space is being transformed into a mixed-use complex of commercial office, retail and light industrial space with an employment potential of over 1,500 jobs. The project is scheduled to begin October 1, 2010, with a completion date of January 1, 2011.
