Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.
I wanted to be one of those people who couldn't use it on Oct 22 when the system crashed.

We have a T-Mobile business acct or I would get an iPhone. AT&T were not interested in giving us a business acct which was annoying since their wired-based people have been really good to us.

I was considering this but I don't like the idea of a 2 year contract even with t-mobile (who have been pretty good to me).
I'll probably just hold out for an unlocked phone when they come out. I'm pretty fine trailing back a bit till prices come down too.
From the looks of it I would break this thing in a week or less
I cannot own nice things. :(
in other news...
T-Mobile is putting the most aggressive bandwidth cap we've seen in the United States on its "unlimited" Internet access plan for the G1.
In the fine print on its G1 site: "If your total data usage in any billing cycle is more than 1GB, your data throughput for the remainder of that cycle may be reduced to 50 kbps or less." That is: Use this phone too much and we're going to cripple it.
*facepalm*

I call that smart lawyer covering the bases. If they actually implement that policy across the board, they will face a class action they will likely lose. On the other hand, it is a useful tool to clobber a tiny percentage of mega-users who will go nuts to the detriment of the larger user base.
I think you remember writing TOS that gave you power to do whatever when you saw fit. So far, my experience with T-Mobile has been their ability to see fit has been very reasonable. Anyone can turn into bastards so I judge based on implementation, not written policy.
In other words, I still want one.

I think it looks a little retro. It's a little thick with loads of empty real estate on the bottom...

frankly so do I, but I don't think it would be a good idea for me. I can see someone like you would get a lot of use and enjoyment out of it.
I suspect, though, that a lot of users are going to find 1GB all too easy to hit. If it's strictly enforced it's going to become a big hairy furball.
We shall see. I gotta make some time to haunt the T-Mobile store or sweet-talk my biz rep.

i really like the size. i get the thing all jacked up trying to use the keyboard on bryan's iphone
i am pretty much absolutely 100% sold on the g1. interface, addons, open source, developer friendly, and the "market" all do it for me. if you're interested, this is the video that sold me. (looks like they held the event at guastavino's under the queensboro bridge in nyc, beautiful space with vaulted stone ceilings, but ridiculously overpriced for underwhelming menu.)
It's cool, but it won't pull me away from the iPhone. Here's a nice comparison of the G1 and the iPhone. I like the openness of the app market and integration with native apps, but that does also open things up for abuse/viruses.

All that video did was make me want to kick the guys that shot it in the jimmy (unsteady video, bad lighting and shitty audio FTL).
Srsly though, the only thing I got from that was you could mix apps and the API is open. To be honest, that's what makes this so huge. I'd have loved to have seen more examples of other apps and how you can mix them. I think this is really going to rock Apple's world. I'm looking forward to it...
I'm still going to wait till i can buy it unlocked direct from HTC. I figure it shouldn't be long if i get it from China directly.
Only 1GB?
I'm still leaning towards an iphone when my contract expires with Sprint.
Being a Windows Mobile user, I am likely going to buy the device in the following video as my next device. It won't be available in the US for several months, so I hope my current piece of crap phone/PDA will last a little longer.

I also love the iPhone, and I would seriously consider it, but there are a few things that hold me back:
1. I have a lot of money invested in Windows Mobile software that I don't want to toss.
2. Though I love the sensitivity of the iPhone screen, I like to have the option of using a stylus. I often like to jot down some notes, or make a sketch, or even enter text through handwriting recognition, and a stylus is needed to do these things.
3. Currently, I do a lot of multitasking, which I would miss on the iPhone.
4. I like the openness of the WM platform (being able to load any kind of software, being able to tweak it, etc.)
I don't think the majority of people care about these things, and instead prefer a device that is a great phone/texter and media player. In that case, nothing will top the iPhone.
Being the geek that I am, however, I guess I tend to view my device as more of a pocket computer than as a phone, so I am likely going to stick with WM for now, and try to hold out for this particular device. Even though the WM user interface sucks, the use of HTC's Touch Flow helps until WM 7.0 comes out next year.

I think it looks like the first sidekick had sex with a commodore 64.
I love google and their open technologies - heck i use gmail because its the biggest and best (at most things) free email. but nothing will top an iphone for me. i don't have one, but i have the new ipod touch which really only lacks the phone, the camera, and you need hotspots to get online. And already i can't live without it after 2 months. i never had a pda and never saw the need. now i'm actually getting stuff done with an ipod! so the iphone is next.
plus, i had tmobile before... never again. it was a freezin winter to have to go outside for 1 bar.

Up to 32GB can be used

I've done successive 2-year contracts with T-Mobile ever since 2001. Hasn't been unpleasant at all.
I need to look more into this phone; I didn't even know it was coming out for T-Mobile. That's something I've been waiting for, since my old phone is somewhat rickety now (I think I've had this one for more than two years, and it was a discontinued old model when I got it because they were trying to get rid of them, so I got a massive rebate over and above the discount one gets for renewing a plan).
