I read about this today:
http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2010/05/scientists-create-first-self-replicating-synthetic-life/
"In a feat that is the culmination of two and a half years of tests and adjustments, researchers at the J. Craig Venter Institute inserted artificial genetic material  chemically printed, synthesized and assembled  into cells that were then able to grow naturally."
This makes me think about Bill Joy's "Why the Future Doesn't Need Us", although that had a bit of a different focus IIRC. I'm planning to read it again.
I'm seeing people bring up "grey goo" in response to this as well.
Thoughts on this? Exciting, frightening or a little of both?
