I'd like to keep this a secret, but got much love for Tip Top and betty's so:

Lake Vesuvius. 'Bout two hours south in the Ironton District of the Wayne National. Right down near the bottom "point" of Ohio.

Camp at the Iron Ridge campsite. Hike down on the Whiskey Run trail in your bathing suit (bout a mile and a half), a great little hike with lots of rock formations and huge natural overhang cave. Go to the left once you hit the lake trail. You'll come to a bend with a giant boulder and lots of rocks to climb, but also a small section of sandy beach that goes right into the super clean water of Lake Vesuvius.
We've nicked named this spot the "swimmy hole".

Coy - that sounds awesome! It also sounds a lot like the "swimmy holes" I used to go to in Upstate NY, in the state parks there. Oh, how I miss Robert Treman state park - hike two miles uphill, until you feel like you are going to die, eat a pb & j, swim at the bottom of a massive waterfall, hike down. Such a great way to spend a hot summer day.

If you scroll down, I found a picture of the mini beach of the swimmy hole.
Third pic down. "Lake and Rock Outcropping", but you can see the little sandy area, too.
I believe its directly across the lake from the boat dock's cove area.
As it states, you can also reach the spot by just hiking the lake trail if you aren't camping.
if you ARE camping, I recommend site 34 in the Iron Ridge campsite.
It was only like $14 a night.
And dogs are okay.
National Forests rule.

Robert Treman is indeed the bomb. One of best things about summers in Ithaca was the ability to hike into just about any gorge and find a rock to sit on and a swimmy hole of your very own to play in. A swimming pool just isn't quite the same.

What a great thread. I too was terribly spoiled for most of my life and lived a max of 10 miles from the beach. Being landlocked was the biggest challenge of the move to Columbus.

But all these lovely options sound so interesting, I've never swam in a lake and find it curiously gross, but still looking forward to heading to one of these spots this hot hot summer. Thank you lovelies!

I miss Ithaca - really the whole Finger Lakes region. When I lived in that neck of the woods, I would go years without dipping a toe in a pool - it was always those lovely shale-bottomed creeks that raged and flowed out of a gorge. And that water was COLD. Fresh-off-a-glacier cold.
