so, it's a given that aki-hana is the end-all be-all when it comes to sushi in columbus, but i'm looking for somewhere that the girl & i haven't had yet, and mostly somewhere with a much more romantic vibe than what the former-restaurant-japan has to offer.
and as a guide: IMHO shoku totally blows haiku out of the water for both quality AND vibe.
so, where would you go for a sexy li'l birthday meal?

I'm going to give a HUGE plus one to Otani, atmosphere wise its the Top Steakhouse of sushi, and fantastic for a date.

i'm not sure how they're ranked for sushi alone, although i think it's pretty good, but how about yoshi's...they do izakaya food (think japanese version of tapas), as well as entrees. small dimly lit (in a good way) that creates a great atmosphere and has really great food.

I love Yoshi's and think they have fantastic food, but their interior doesn't exactly scream romance. It's pretty plain Jane in there.

Any thoughts on sushi + kids? We usually just get sushi from the grocery store and take it home, but it would be nice to go out from time to time. I have a toddler and a baby. The toddler is pretty good in restaurants and generally knows how to behave.

heh. it's been a while since i've been in there (must remedy that), but maybe i was just wooed by the food and forgot to look up :)

Mercury anyone? I would keep the kiddos away from ocean keystone predators, maybe once a month tops. Restaurant Japan used to be my favorite sushi stop in town, now I don't eat fish except maybe 1-2 a year, and then it is usually farm raised domestic tilapia or farm raised catfish. Fish is the new veal.

Pretty much every time I've been in Yoshi's, there have been kids in there, so while it's a small place, they can manage it. I've seen kids in Kikyo as well....
