not to mention that it was served on these large marble slabs which were difficult to pass down the table.
Those were the floor tiles.
Eating off plates is sooooo fall 2009, eating off the floor is what's in. Who knew Tenzo was a trend setter.

Cooked or raw, big rolls live up to their billingJust did a quick scan of that.. I'm betting all the tuna is "heavily seasoned" because it's low quality or just plain off.. His roll heavy review tells me very little about sushi rock. He would have been better off getting a bunch of nigirizushi which would have put the fish and the rice front and center, giving him a better idea of the skill of the chefs and the quality of the ingredients. Then again, it's a bit much to ask for a worthwhile review out of Christensen.

Was watching Iron Chef America last night
(yeah, my Christmas is exciting)Someone was plating an appetizer on a piece of slate.
Alton Brown shouts out; "That's not a plate, it's a floor tile!"Ha!
I kid you not.Posted 2 years ago # -

I tried sushi rock. It's OK for sushi in Columbus... especially since it's so pricey.
Do they have a half price night like they do in Cleveland? That's what I'd like to see...Posted 2 years ago # -
I just read some more of this thread and I have to comment. Not about Sushi Rock...
I feel bad for Don Ed Hardy. Well I would feel worse if he wasn't bathing in bathtubs of cash. It's not his fault he's popular with douchebags. I watched an interview with him on a "art or not" type program on Ovation. He seemed like a nice honest guy. Got into Yale for art, realized that he was more into tattoo and surfer culture and dropped out.
I don't like his work, but I don't blame him for all these potential date rapists that define their wardrobe around him.
That's all I had to say.

I was not intending to say anything bad about this restaurant until having two bad experiences there (2 out of 2 times). On our first visit my boyfriend was served his steak entree almost twenty minutes before I received my sushi dinner and that was after already waiting for nearly an hour. I sat and watched him eat and then he sat and watched me eat. To top it off my sushi had some sort of brown sauce drizzled all over it making it unappetizing. For a place called Sushi Rock it certainly does not, and we were sitting right next to the sushi chefs as they watched TV, why my dinner took so long I have no idea. The restaurant was gracious enough and subtracted the cost of my meal from the bill.
We were not going to go back, but my boyfriend saw a great deal being advertised for Valentine’s Day weekend - a bottle of house wine, appetizer, 2 entrees, and a dessert for $75. We arrived at 7pm on Saturday night and were promptly seated, the restaurant was busy, but not excessively so. We got our bottle of wine within 5 minutes, after that we waited until 8:00, an hour after arriving, until we got our simple lobster roll appetizer. At 8:30 we had to ask when our entrees might be served and because we drank our bottle of wine in that hour and a half of waiting we were offered two complimentary glasses of wine for our trouble. The entrees finally came out a few minutes after that along with our added side dish of lobster mashed potatoes. The potates were absolutely cold and we had to return them. They were replaced without an apology. Overall our food tasted pretty good, and our waitress was nice enough. The manager on the other hand was rude and seemingly annoyed by us as if we should not have cared that our food was cold and took over an hour and half to be served. We left over two hours after arriving. We will never go back to Sushi Rock as there are too many wonderful restaurants in Columbus to waste our time and money where they are not appreciated.Posted 2 years ago # -
sounds like the clock is ticking on these folks.

We tried this place out last Friday, and everything was...mediocre in my opinion. The sake was served in something that more closely resembled a shot glass. The gentlemen in our party enjoyed their cocktails, but our friends partner ended up sending her Manhattan back. The risotto that was to accompany the lamb chops, was more of a barley...and our server forgot to include silverware with the appetizer, so it was risotto and chop sticks.
We ordered the chef's special, as well as a few rolls, and it was competent, but nothing outstanding. I commented at some point that I felt the sashimi was served too cold, so that you didn't really get a flavor from the fish.
To top it all off, we somehow managed to get seated in the bar section, which normally would be fine, but their TV placement meant or table was between two LCD screens both tuned to ESPN, personally, I do not like a side of Tiger Woods with my sushi.Posted 2 years ago # -
The key to enjoying sushi rock is to expect a circus. Mrs. H and I went last night during arnoldfest gallery hop expecting to be elbow to elbow with suburban cougars, meat heads and douchebags. It wasn't that bad at all.
1. Clearly they've gotten the message about the music. We sat down at 8pm, and no loud music.
2. The bar scenes at the front was a bit scary, with exactly the mix mentioned above, but we got placed in a quieter spot in the back. I suggest asking for such if you want to enjoy your meal.
3. Service was pretty slow. Not excruciating, but slow.
4. I got a large Sapporo, Mrs. H got sake2me ginger mango, which sounds ridiculous but was actually really good. After that, she got the house dry sake, which was fine, but served in a 12oz bottle with a shot glass, which is weird.
5. edaname was served hot and really good.
6. The tuna and salmon sashimi was probably the best we've had in columbus. excellent texture, very fresh - not quite the melt-in-your mouth that we haven't had since we left cali, but close.
7. The big rolls are huge - we got the golden dragon, which is basically the entire fish selection in one roll. Too much going on.
8. the standard rolls were all good - nothing incredible, but worthwhile.
9. Prices were fine and comparable to other columbus area restaurants. I think the sticker shock expressed here is based on the prices of the big roll. You're definitely getting what you pay for, at least in shear mass, for those. All in all, we were pleasantly surprised, especially by the excellent sashimi. I wish that haiku would get their fish, because I like haiku's ambiance and service more.

to #4, when I did sake once at a more traditional sushi place (the one north of Lane) they brought it out in the bottle with 2 glasses for the two of us. Of course my friend took one sip, didn't care for it, and left me to finish the bottle.
I typically do sushi by myself, unless my little sister is home. I've promised to take her for sushi and sake when she turns 21. So I'll see how other places serve it then.

As ShoNo dwellers, we usually gravitate to Haiku or Kooma for our sushi cravings, but opted to check out Sushi Rock Sunday night. We were seated outside at 8:20...we left at 8:40. Why? Nobody came to our table. Fifteen minutes into our wait a server did come outside to talk to friends seated behind us. And, the hostess came out to check on the table of the server's friends. But, we waited....and waited...and waited...my husband and I have both worked as hosts and servers, so we are aware that sometimes a server can get backed up which can delay greeting a table. However, twenty minutes is a bit much. The hostess did glance at our table as she passed but made no mention that the server would be with us shortly. Rather, she and the other server discussed among themselves taking our place settings away to use with another table. After they both went back inside and we waited 5 more minutes, we decided to leave. When we returned our menus to the hostess and manager, they did not so much as bat an eye and went back to their conversation. We tried to give them a fair shake despite the reviews we've read/heard. I think Haiku and Kooma will continue to get our business. Yay, service!

I drive past the one in Beachwood on Thursday night ("Tsunami" Thursday) on the way back to my apartment in Cleveland Heights from here at school... it looks like a Quaker Steak and Lube Bike night complete with 100's of dudes standing around the parking lot in Affliction shirts... really comical actually.

Just got invited to a party there tonight... Still laughing about this thread every time I drive past! Haha... "Sushi Lover" ;)

Any good sushi happy hour near the Short North area? Thanks.

My girlfriend - someone who will not touch seafood - often points out to me that their steak medallions are the best non-traditional option of any sushi place in Columbus (and very reasonable at around $12, big enough for a meal). Certainly beats me paying $5 for a piece of asparagus wrapped in rice.
Okay service, good food. Music occasionally too loud.
Certainly hope they stick around. The Cleveland locations seem to be great.
