Any word on when this place is supposed to open?
Also, does anyone know whether there are any plans to bring a decent sushi place to German Village? It would be nice to not have to always go to the Short North for quality sushi. But, maybe potential investors are scared of the rash of crime in GV recently?

No, there isn't good sushi in the Short North. I haven't been to Kooma in forever so I can't speak to that.
However, i do love the patio at Haiku and every once in awhile I will brave the service to sit outside and drink some decent sake and eat some "sushi" wherein everything is fully cooked.
it's really far away for you, i think, but another great sushi/Japanese place is Yoshi's, which is on Frantz road in Dublin (kind of near Tuttle mall). Yoshi's is good if you would like traditional Japanese fare (like Kihachi) with more of a traditional sushi menu.

I've always enjoyed the place just north of Lane Ave by a few streets. West side of the street, almost on the corner-you can't miss it. Pretty close to the SN.

I've always had bad service at Haiku, and the food was horrible every time, so I'm never going back.. Kooma is OK (not great) but the service was horrible.. The tuna and salmon I've had at Nida's was OK, but I prefer the Thai dishes..
It's been about 8 years since I've been to Sushi Rock in Cleveland, but it left a pretty negative impression on me.. I'm probably not going to rush there to try it out...

I do like Yoshi's a lot.. It's worth sitting at the counter a few times and let the owner get to know you.. He's a very friendly guy and will remember what you like.. They also have more of a sushi selection than Kihachi and the quality is good overall..

Has a nice name to it that reminds me of my dating adventures in Japan. A Yoshi is a male who dates above his social station and marries a woman, therby increasing his social status. I was dating the daughter of the Minister of Agriculture when they teased me with that name.

After a couple of visits at Kihachi they will let you order off the menu. I was sitting with my wife, with a plate of omakase sushi, when someone in jeans and a t-shirt comes in and asks if they serve sushi. The waitress quickly directed him to another place saying they did not serve it there.
Of course, it took me a view visits before they would let me use the tatami room.

We've been getting Haiku to-go for the past 2 months and loved it. They have a wider variety menu than most places around Short North and they're not too expensive (about $35 for my girlfriend and I to have dinner). I'm not saying every roll they have is great, but I do like the High Street roll and the Shrimp tempura.
