A weird assault happened to the son of an acquaintance, and I'm wondering if anyone has heard anything about this. It happened Sept. 13, a football game night (right before the hurricane).
The kid (well, he is 21, but I call him a kid) was at the Ugly Tuna drinking with his friends, and left to walk home about 2AM. Shortly after leaving the bar the three of them were sucker punched as they walked down High Street. The weird parts â€“ they were not robbed. Just punched once in the face. All three of them, by three attackers. Just boom, hit in the face, then the attackers ran away.
My friend's son got hurt the worst, he lost multiple teeth and had to go to the ER, and has had oral surgery that has cost them thousands of dollars.
The police were called and showed up fast, but they were discouraging the kids from reporting the assault. The police were telling them that there was no use trying to find the criminals, I'm assuming this was to keep the crime statistics down.
Since then, they have heard stories that this was some sort of game â€“ maybe people do this to video, and post on the internet? Or some sort of Frat game?
Anyone heard about this sort of assault on High street?

Most likely it sounds like they were victim of the game "knockout" which has happened before in multiple parts of town. I don't think it's a frat game. More of a thuggish high school teen game. Some of the kids that assaulted people in Schiller Park last year confessed to playing knockout when they attacked their victims.
Sorry to hear about friend's son. This type of thing should not be tolerated, and the attack should be reported, no matter how slim the chance of catching the idiots who did it.

Sounds like knockout to me. Its a game that tweens and teens play.

A friend of mine was stopped at the red light at Cleveland and 5th over the summer when some lil' thugs hit him. They then crossed the street and hung out at Popeye's. My friend called the cops. He pointed directly to the assailants in the Popeye's lot, and the police refused to do anything about it. The CPD responded something like "well, that's what you should expect in this area." or some bullshit like that. He had some teeth knocked out as well. :(

Well if it's becoming popular then assault reports will skyrocket unless they talk people out of it, but that's pretty much BS. That's an assault and whether it comes with a robbery or not it should be reported. If a bunch of people are getting randomly hit in the face on a certain corner I want to know about it so I don't go there.

Nothing new, guy was killed on the West Side by this game a couple years ago, and the assaults in German Village a year or two back were kids playing Knockout after a school dance.

someone I knew broke into a guys car on campus many years ago , The guys who's car it was saw came out and kicked his ass! As the guy turned to walk away the robber shot him in the back.
He got 5 years for having the gun( automatic gun spec) 2 years for shooting him ( the guy did not die) but still ?!?!?!?!

I sometimes wonder whether the effectiveness of plea bargains are really worth the price in diminished justice. I wish the papers would quit refering to this as a "game." A game necessitates that all participants are willing.

I'm not a fan of that intersection, or that Popeye's. I'm assuming your friend wasn't in a car?
If I was a scooter person or a biker I'd almost certainly be carrying concealed on that part of 5th.

The cops should have done something considering the assailants were ID'd right there. That is unacceptable. But thats not what bothers me the most here. The sociopathic violence which seems to involve the use of more than fists (broken teeth...brass knuckles?) concerns me much more than apathetic police patrolling an dangerous precinct.
IMHO, this behavior is a symptom of a very sick upbringing, probably devoid of any moral foundation that one could get from for example, going to church. Its very disturbing.

(not serious on that,...however the attitude of the c-bus cops is really what is disturbing to me concerning this on both incidents)

Technically, a more proper phrasing would be 'suicide bombing resulting in mass casualties'. A suicide bomber almost always dies first, in opposition to more conventional American mass murderers who usually kill themselves after their spree. Conflating the two just because people want to hear them referred to as "mass murderers" actually has more potential to confuse people trying to prevent either because the underlying grievances that you find in your more garden variety mass murderer dies when they die. Not so with the grievances that typically motivate an ongoing parade of suicide bombers.
That said, I do agree that "knockout" shouldn't be referred to as a game (as neither suicide bombing though in some sense it is violent political gamesmanship), and I'd suggest contacting any reporter who refers to it as such and ask them to clarify that statement in print or on tv.
