A good tip I had heard somewhere: Take your keys to bed with you at night so that if something were to happen you can trip the panic button on your vehicle to draw attention to your house and perhaps scare away an intruder, etc.

On second thought:
Get a bike- enjoy the bike trails and not how easy it is to get around the city.
Enjoy walking to the North Market on the weekends. Utilize your local park. Enjoy
the many outdoor movies in the summer. Embrace being able to check out gallery
hop, Comfest, Doo-dah, and Red, White & Boom without having to park your car.
Join your neighborhood civic association. Check CU's Mega Weekend Calender, as
there is always something to go see or get involved in. Get out and enjoy all downtown
living has to offer! The rest of these things will seem pretty minor- and worth it- if you do.

Yeah, but don't you live in the older "urban" part of Dublin? That's why you have those problems. Not suburban enough! ;)

Ha.. yea. I should have added that if you have $300K+ to spend on a home, you'll likely be miles from the robberies of businesses, banks, bars and restaurants. Granted, that's because you'll also be miles from businesses, banks, bars and restaurants. :-)
The pricey areas still have vandalism and personal theft issues much like the "urbanizing" (we'll call it that) area I'm in.
Point is, while crime frequency and type may differ, the suburbs aren't exactly void of it and no one should base living decisions on that issue alone.

I've noticed that when I watch the news these days that tons of the crime reported is from places outside the traditional urban core. It wasn't like that in the '90s. Back then it was all "East Side" shooting, Short North Posse, Operation Ace and whatnot.

After 15 years living downtown, one learns street smarts. Learn to trust your instincts. The above posters have some good suggestions. Just be aware of the enviroment around you, know how to read people, and you should be okay. I used to live in Whitehall, and before that near OSU, and I feel safer downtown. Don't take safety for granted, urban or rural.

Heh. Crime is more widespread than people think. I think the Park National Bank in Kirkersville (population: 600), where I grew up, was just robbed recently.
Quick, sharp detective work by the police force there solved the crime, though. It helped that the guy didn't cover his face and people recognized him as the guy who lived in the apartment above the bank. (The joys of mixed-used buildings, right? Nice having a nice, robbable bank on the ground floor ...)
The swift sleuthing by the local police did not significantly increase their positive profile with residents, though. Then again, the Kirkersville police are reality-TV-worthy. (I've been told several of them are former New Rome cops, if that tells you anything.) Recently, they busted a guy for an open container violation. The man had been collecting bottles and cans left by the side of the road to recycle them.

I grew up in Marysville (which is bigger than Kirkersville, but still a small suburban city) and it seems like every few months a big crime headline will grab my attention about meth rings being busted, streets full of overnight tire slashings, and crazy car-chases-turned-shootouts.

The bank in Amanda, Ohio used to get robbed all the time (dunno if it still does) since they had to wait for the Fairfield County sheriff to show up every time.

Touche. When I was at OSU, we had a murder in the gateway garage at 2:37am right outside my place on 11th. I **** you not, in under 2 minutes from the sound of the gun going off to a half dozen city and OSU police running down the sidewalk with full on assault rifles after the guy. I think I was in more awe of how fast they were, than the guy actually getting murdered. Of course, it always depends on where you live in the city too and what police district. Crime was totally non existent on my place in 2nd Ave. Hell, I never even locked my car or house doors because it was so safe and I had a brand new 52" LCD sitting right next to the front window. Even so, I saw city police cruisers often enough going up and down Neil, that I have no doubt they would be there in 5 minutes or less as it's a dense enough area, that there is always a cruiser nearby. If not a cruiser, plenty of community goers in Harrison West to stop whoever may be committing the crime.
