According to them, Columbus has no potential for pro sports expansion with its existing teams, based on the income it would take to support a franchise. Cincy and Cleveland are already over-extended (as are Detroit, Milwaukee, and KC)

I would agree, at least for the Big Three (Football, Basketball and Baseball). Columbus is too Buckeye-centric. No professional Football team will garnish the support and love that folks here shower on the Buckeyes. In addition, the fact that Columbus has no less than 5 NFL teams located less than a 4 hour’s drive away, what’s really the point. Basketball to me just doesn’t seem to have the following here. Unless we were to get a LaBron or Kobe quality superstar, I do not think many people would even bother. And Baseball, I feel everyone in this town identifies with the Indians or the Reds. I think it would be a tough sale to start a major league Baseball team here and expect real support; especially when the odds are they’d suck for the first 4 to 5 years.
I say we should fight for the pro (I mean Major League) sports we have and be happy. Let’s not loss the Blue Jackets and Crew, and you always have the Buckeye to put us on the map (good or bad). Columbus is a great sports town (According to Men’s Health magazine’s Metrograde July/August 2009 Columbus is #5 out of 100). There's nothing to be ashamed of or worried about.

I thought they were building a pretty big downtown minor league baseball park downtown.. If they could add a USL.. err... NASL.. umm. Second League Soccer pitch to the deal, I'd consider moving there.

I think other pro organizations see what's going on here with the Blue Jackets and their dismal attendance, and they realize that this town is a one trick Pony: OSU Football.
NFL team would never take the risk, plus we are only a couple of hours from pro teams in either direction.
Same thing for MLB.
The NBA, nah they can keep that crap. After the refs admitted to betting on games they ref. it's hard for me to take 'em serious.

They're pro because they are paid to play - that's what makes anyone a professional anything.
The level of play is lower because they aren't as good, or paid as much, as the next level up, but they make more and the play is much better than the next level down.
The stadium was built for a AAA team.

NBA would work, and the blue jackets attendance is far from dismal, the arena deal sucks, but people support the jackets, one of the tops in the league, look it up. An NBA team at Nationwide would be awesome, and judging by the Cavs game here a few months ago (I know it was Lebron and all but there are enough stars in the league to make a tuesday night at Nationwide a destination) people would support it. Plus Nationwide needs another tenant, not enough secondary money coming in, money outside the blue jackets.

LOCAL RATINGS FOR THE COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS ON FOX SPORTS OHIO ARE UP 38 PERCENT
COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets created a lot of excitement and fan support last season in making their Stanley Cup Playoff debut and setting various team and television ratings records. That enthusiasm has continued into this season as the local ratings for their live game telecasts on FOX Sports Ohio are up 38 percent.
· The average rating through 28 televised games is 1.82 HH.
· Last season, the average rating was 1.32 at same number of games.
The Blue Jackets ratings on FOX Sports Ohio started off strong this season with an October rating 54% higher than last year’s October rating. November was up 37% respectively as well.
Nielsen HH ratings for the Blue Jackets on FOX Sports Ohio are additionally on the rise outside the Columbus, Ohio market. In Cleveland and Cincinnati, ratings continue to see an increase.
“Clearly, Ohio fans are still discovering this team and like what they see,†stated Henry Ford, Senior Vice President and General Manager, FOX Sports Ohio. “Downtown Columbus comes alive for a Blue Jackets game. This type of enthusiasm translates not only to a greater economic impact in the home city, but also to improved ratings throughout our viewing area.â€Â
