Just a friendly reminder to remember which days they sweep the streets in your neighborhood.
Here on Hamlet in the IV, it's the third Tuesday of May, August, and November.
It costs $130 to pick up your car from:
City of Columbus
Parking Violations Bureau
400 West Whittier Street
Columbus, OH 43215

Monday through Friday
9:00 AM - 7:30 PM

They will not knock on your door before they tow you, or leave a note saying that they took your car (in case you didn't know that it was a street sweeping day and thought that your car was stolen).

Make sure it's not Wednesday too. In the part of IV that I park in, it is Tuesday for the East and North sides of the street, Wednesday for the West and South.

Do the streets really need to be cleaned that frequently? At all? I mean, there are plenty of streets that aren't swept by big ass dustbuster machines, and don't seem to look any worse off for it.
Serious question, just not sure if the inconvenience is really worth it.

i had to head up and down the street ringing neighbors' door bells today, as there were still 4 cars on the street when the ticket pad toters showed up. luckily, everyone was still home and could move their car before the tickets were written. the next street over, some were towed.
and yes, it is opposite side tomorrow around here.

I think the city makes a ton of money off of the towing associated with the street cleaning; so I don't think they'll get rid of it even if the streets don't need it. When I parked on Kerr today, they had 4 or 5 people writing the tickets on the cars and a couple tow trucks carrying them away as fast as they can.

Yes, it is only 3 times per year in the IV. And the shopping bags, sales circulars and dead maggot-infested bird are all now gone.

It's monthly in GV, and it doesn't seem to make much difference other than to cause a severe dearth of parking a couple days per month.

monthly seems excessive. the only advantage i can think of is at least that makes it routine, whereas ours requires random memory skills in May, August & November.

When I lived in GV, our street was never swept. Our landlord had multiple cars parked on the streets for months at a time. There was plenty of buildup around his vehicles.

Yes, I got two flat tire this past week. There is glass everywhere if you look close enough.

The street cleaning tow-away areas are a real problem for the City and they aren't adding any more. Originally OSU-area neighborhood civic and business groups lobbied for no parking enforcement; the streets were filthy, they said, and their solution was signage & strict enforcement.
Ticket writing didn't solve the problem and the street cleaners continued to clean where they could, maneuvering around the (ticketed) parked cars. At the urging of the community, a tow-away policy was implemented and signs were added to the visual clutter.
A few other urban neighborhoods jumped on the street-cleaning/tow away bandwagon but no more will be added, the option is no longer offered. Logistically, it takes street maintenance crews an enormous amount of time to simultaneously summon ticket writers and private tow trucks. It's no fun to tow someone's car, street cleaning crews take no joy in it.
Sometimes the City helps arrange bright colored windshield reminders and if it's available, install the message trailer to remind everyone. City government could do better at reaching out, I agree.

when i was young one of my great grandmas lived in a tiny basement appt in GV.
she was certainly old... I'll give ya that.

I don't think it's necessary. And it is a great way for the city to make money on people who aren't normally criminals - just forgetful. I've been towed twice from 3rd Street in German Village. The second time was while we were moving are were too tired to wonder why there were no spots on Kossuth. $100+ is far too much to charge for a simple mistake and a tow.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Columbus is working on a plan to notify neighborhoods earlier when street-sweeping crews are due. Streets in some neighborhoods, such as German Village, Italian Village, Harrison West and those near Ohio State University, are swept each month and have signs posted listing the days when people need to move their cars. But others don't have the signs.
