I found a lot of these pics interesting, they are all in Columbus.
Plus, she has a site up to buy pics where the money goes to The Columbus Coalition for the Homeless http://www.careyspics.com/art_for_the_homeless_main.htm

They do these papers out in San Fran and Oakland and I personally think that it is a great way to get the homeless into a position that empowers them to spread knowledge and make a buck at the same time. Kudos to whomever brought this about!!

Sure beats "hey bro, my car ran out of gas and my family and my blah blah, spare some cash?"

There's a very friendly African American gentleman that sometimes sells these on High near City Center or at the corner of High and State. I've bought off him two or three times and he's polite and professional. I'd encourage others to support him.

yeah, that is who I buy mine from too.

Why can't Americans just be Americans?

I did it for identification purposes so others might support him and know he's legit. I shouldn't have doubted the ability of someone to make an inane comment.

Oh right, the african guy. Silly me.

i may have been wrong before about the lady in front of Lola, now she has a badge and is selling the correct paper. anyways, there is a new paper out this month. Still buying from the guy at State and High, he's a great guy and doesn't give you the "Have a blessed day" greeting, which after about the 3rd time hearing it started becoming annoying. that's cool if that's your thing, but I'm supporting the homeless, not the church.

I'd love to see more innovation like this and gateway jobs that increase peoples self esteem, build skills, and get them inputting into the economy. How cool would it be to have an appropriate fusion of job training for reformed convicts that involves supporting the library at a lower cost?

Oh right, the african guy. Silly me.Or can we just go ahead and say "the black guy"? I mean, not saying black people and feeling required to say African-American just seems ridiculous. I know, I know, PC, but avoiding saying it makes it feel like "black" is a bad thing. It's like when I'm talking to a group of white people and in the course of describing someone as black, their voice goes into automatic whisper.
Back to the topic... I saw this in Boston before it came to Columbus and think its great. Would be nice, though, to get the guy who does it around Nationwide to get off my freaking back when I say no to him. He talks all kinds of shit and has almost gotten the backhand a couple times because of what he says. I do stuff for the homeless that goes furher than my dollar and how many times a day to I have to buy the freaking paper anyway.

Hey thanks for posting! It's so important to vendors that people understand Street Speech is a legitimate paper & income source. I think people might pass up vendors assuming that they're trying to panhandle or scam, so the more coverage we get, the better. This is a truly good cause.

there was a guy doing this at the Kmart on Bethel a couple weeks ago.
he had a paper in his hand,but i couldn't understand a word he was saying.Posted 2 years ago # -
I have no clue how I missed this until now (Ok I do a little, it's because I haven't had much free time for CU lately) However, I write for Street Speech. The office is indeed on 3rd, 75 cents of each $1 sale goes to the vendor. Vendors are required to attend a monthly meeting and they are (as some have noted) subject to the rules/policy stated in Street Speech. I haven't been writing for the paper for too long, but I thought highly of it before I began writing too :) I feel it is a wonderful program. Of course there are problems that crop up, but that is to be expected. As of January we had 470 Street Speech vendors. I have had someone try to sell me an issue that was 2 months old, he didn't lie mind you, but that's not the point. Other than things like that, I feel that the paper is an enhancement to the downtown area & the homeless who serve it. Lastly, they now offer a subscription to/delivery of the paper, which I believe is $25 for the year. (don't quote me on the $ ;))
Check it out!Posted 2 years ago # -
Have you reported him? There is information in the paper as to who you can contact... or I can get the info for you if you'd like.
