Street-fight DVD creates buzz onlineMonday, October 02, 2006
Theodore Decker
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
The word girl is emblazoned in pink block letters across the back of the young woman’s black shirt, but the rapid-fire punches she’s throwing on camera are far from girlish.
She pummels her rival as a crowd gawks. There is no context for the violence, but her fighting skills are now immortalized, for better or worse, on a homegrown Columbus DVD titled The 614 Vol. 1, Strictly 4 Da Streets.
Named for the city’s area code, the roughly 30-minute video shows a series of street fights. It’s poorly shot and essentially plotless, but it has developed a following, apparently only a few weeks after being released.

Local Teens Star In Underground Fighting Video
Community Gathers To Discuss Change
UPDATED: 7:25 pm EST November 30, 2006
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A violent fight was captured on tape -- all for fame and bragging rights on the streets. The people involved in the fight are not random faces on the Internet but, rather, local teenagers.
The "614" DVD is packed with 30 minutes of fighting around Columbus. The video became popular among teenagers, but leaders of a community call it a threat.

"These animals"? ... :?
Anyhow, I don't see anything wrong with a street fight DVD. The fights occur whether people are videotaping them or not, and you can turn on the news and see footage of people shooting and killing each any day of the week. I find it interesting to watch actual fights between untrained people and see how they develop.

I think the problem here is that these DVDs aren't just people fighting... they're kids fighting.
It's stupid. These kids can be doing something better with their time than punching each other in the face. And shame on their parents for allowing them to participate in something like this.

Oh I definitely agree with you. They should not be fighting, and it is sad. Also, it's probably not so good to exploit kids fighting to make a profit.
However, it is something that has been happening since the beginning of time and will continue. The context of the fights is rarely revealed in this style of video, but typically it is two kids that have had ongoing beef or one who wants to prove himself/herself to a group, and so they organize a fight outdoors, in front of someone's house, in a parking lot, a park, etc. Someone has the foresight to bring a video camera, and now it's documented, just like any other cultural event can be documented. This just happens to be the seedy underbelly of society.

First off I don't think the duration of the fight is so long that it doesn't allow the kids to do anything else with the time they have. Second I'm sure none of the parents were aware their kids were involved in such a video prior to the film. To boot I wouldn't be so sure that all of the kids that were taped were aware they were in the video. Kids fight it is the nature of expolring life in the inner city. I personally think the video is great for being so bad. It actually lets parents know what kind of shit happens in the street. It's not a perfect world and sometimes that can be blurred by the facade that kids put on for their parents. If there was a video out of the shit I did as a kid my parents would have taken a whole different approcah to parenting I'm sure of it.

I don't think parents need video evidence to know what goes on in the streets unless they are really lazy parents.
Sure, kids will fight. Kids will do dumb things. Kids will get in trouble. But this DVD wasn't meant to be an educational tool. It was meant for profit. It glamorizes these fights in away that they shouldn't be. It attracts unnecessary glory towards something that doesn't deserve it.
I'm not sure if anyone is breaking any laws with what is going on here, and I don't think the kids should be punished too hard for this sort of thing. I think it should just be a wakeup call for the parents of the children invovled and a brisk wag-of-the-finger in their direction for not keeping better tabs on the goings-on in their children's developing young lives.

first article wrote The combatants are breaking the law, though, and he said investigators and detectives have copies of the DVD. Participants theoretically could be identified, tracked down and charged, but police said they mainly plan to use the footage for intelligence purposes, to put together faces and places.
Police recognized some of the people, Bash said, but they’re not "gang fights or anything like that."
Sounds like the cops feel differently. These kids are breaking the law. And if they really wanted to, the cops would track people down and punish them. Instead it sounds like they are keeping a record of names and faces and will have a background of information of all of these kids when they are arrested later in life because they never learned and no one ever bothered to teach them the proper way to deal with shitty people and problems.
I would hope the cops could identify people to get them some help, or tell their parents, hey, your kid is doing shit like this, do you know about it and since you do now, maybe you should do something about it. (but that isn't their job!) Parents should talk to their kids. Get them involved in something proactive where they learn there are better ways to deal with something that is bothering you instead of violence.

Walker I have a question first! Did you grow up in the inner city with poor to middle class parents?.
I have no clue whare you come from. I have lived in trailerparks, ghettos, and great neighborhoods and I must say it isn't always that easy or even possible. To think that every parent out there works one job and has the time to know what kids get into behind watching eyes would be far from correct. Sure alot of kids have a parent that drives them to school or meets them at home right after school. However plenty of kids don't have that watching eye and attention. The inner city can be a harsh place to learn people skills. The stress level and obsticles of lower income classes cause odd reactions to the simplest situations. Fighting is the honorable substitute in many cases in rough neighborhoods. Parent just aren't around to witness these instances. Stuff like fighting, gangs, selling drugs, or even shoplifting just aren't things you tell your parents or parent about at the dinner table. So I would think in many cases that parents aren't always that aware of a childs enviroment unless they are fully planted in it.

Assult is a crime in any state and I doubt the video guy has one signed waiver. I do agree that it shold be a wake up call to parents. Sometimes it takes a video or a felony charge for parents to realize what a child does when they leave home. We need picture phones with remote capture so parents can just tap in every so often.

I think those are the kinds of things kids should learn in school if their parents aren't able to be there for them. They need special 'socializing' classes to help them think about things to occupy them. If those parents aren't able to be there, maybe there should be some sort of inner city place where kids can go to have fun and feel safe. Not necessarily a 'daycare' type place, but somewhere kids can go to get the energy out if their homelife sucks. are there any places like that? I have no idea. And I am thinking something with supervised, constructive programs for older kids.
For this lady:
Avis Skinner wrote But she’s most bothered, she said, that the public probably will write off the mostly black youths in the video as urban monsters rather than at-risk children from neighborhoods where violence is commonplace. Few probably think that they’re worth saving, she said.
"Nobody wants a piece of helping these very same kids," she said. "We’ve been condemned as a people."
maybe she could come up with something like that instead of blaming
local television’s interest in and condemnation of the 614 DVD smacks of hypocrisy and bias in a culture where violence as entertainment sells on all fronts, from Jerry Springer to the Grand Theft Auto video game.
Just some thoughts. Of course there are so many underlying issues here, but somewhere nice for these sorts of kids to go after school is out so their parents who are working 2 jobs can know where they are would be nice.

why do these kids have so much pent up anger anyway?
or do they really see this as a fun thing to do?
I haven't watched it so I'm not sure what their ages are. I was assuming 13-18.

Go to the corner of livingston and 22nd and ask the homies there that question. I'm sure they could explain it better. The world isn't peaches and cream for most of us. When the variables add up sometimes you just feel like there is nothing to lose. WHen you get challanged and you have nothing to loose bad things tend to happen. Hell for some people life in jail is better than life on the streets. Go figure!

I'm not trying to say that parenting is easy. Just that children under 18 are the responsibility of their parents no matter where you live or how much money you make. Yes, the inner-city is a tougher place to grow up, but it's not impossible to raise kids properly there.
Assult is a crime in any state and I doubt the video guy has one signed waiver.
I haven't seen the videos, and haven't read much about them other than a few newspaper clips. Yes, assualt is a crime, but I wasn't sure if "sparring with mutual consent" was illegal. I'm no expert on the details of assault, so I'm not sure how much gray-area is involved with these specific videos.
I do agree that it shold be a wake up call to parents.
Amen to that.

so since you side stepped the question one would venture to say that you wern't raised in the inner city or by poor or middle class parents?

I honestly thought it was a rhetorical question since neither your or my personal upbringing has anything to do with this DVD.

FUCK YOU PAUL!
My life is actual content. It's obvious that people don't understand every walk of life on here. I'm just trying to help all you silver platter kids understand how real life goes sometimes. I'm sorry you guys were settled in before I showed up, but deal with it. That's why it's a public forum.
