Yesterday My son and I along with all my neighbors watched a kid get smashed in-between a car and a garage. It was a truly disturbing and sad thing . In fact of all the sick stuff I have seen in my short 28 years of life this has bothered me the most and I have seen some sick stuff. We new why the situation took place and what happened we were helpful to the police. But all those kids that watched that it’s horrible . Of course the news was there asking for interviews I declined I think the news sucks and never reports right any way . My friend Rob gave one the exact story would you know the news screwed that up ? Not surprising I know. So why do they do that are they ignorant can they not hear ? I guess I don’t understand . I mean they always do this but why. They make the news don't report it.

Wow, that's just awful. Sorry you had to see that, and even more sorry for the child.
I'm almost hesitant to ask... but since the news screwed it up, might you want to set the record straight?

so the news report that I saw last night was that some dude deliberately ran over another guy. They also reported that the guy that was hit (and later died) had a "large amount" of weed on his person but pointedly said they "didn't know if that was related to the incident". The report said it was still under investigation
The update I saw today is that one Tyler Hadler had an argument with one Patrick Smith and ended the argument by running over the kid. He is now charged with murder.
Is there actually more to this? It's crazy!

I'm reading the Dispatch article in which it says after Hadler pinned Smith up against the garage with his car he then backed over him, got out of the car, and asked if he was ok.
wow. just. wow...

Well it was little things I know they seem non important but they were off on times and places and stuff like that . Actually what really up set me about this is when I saw the news last night they had my little 5 yr old neighbor kid telling what she saw it was in her back yard where the garage was. I feel like that was not responsible of the news station you know? haven’t they saw enough is it necessary for them to have a re-cap . My street is pretty sociable after work times when everyone is home all the kids are out playing in yards the neighbors are always chatting. So all of our kids on the street saw that It just makes me really sad I hate having to explain that to my son.

Where is this if I may ask?
And I am sympathetic to your experience.
I nearly saw a white college age male with short hair in a black 3 series BMW plate starting EZ3 or ECZ, mow down a pedestrian at 12th and High while making a left turn only to increase his speed recklessly heading north bound on High to get away from me as I yelled at him.

this is really nuts, and i'm sorry that it happened.
the inability of the media to help others understand the world, and their skills seemingly only to gloss over it all in a loose, trivial, 10 second ephemeral way was the subject of the last season of the wire.
i don't know the answer to this

Yes this was on North Ogden on my usually quiet street on the Hilltop close to Vallyview. It's sad
But maybe this is just a rant in a way to deal with it I do apologize to all if it comes off like that. Not sure why this hit so much harder then anything else :(
It's real sad when the cop told that kids sister he had passed away it was truly devastating to see her reaction. My thougths are with there family.

i just have to tell you all that i've known Tyler Hadler since he was a todler. he lived next door to me for many years and has been nothing less than a sweetheart at all times. i never had a bit of problems with him. ever. i have even stayed in contact with him long after they moved.
i also worked with his mother for many years. their family IS the kind of family you want to live next door to you. i've never known of Tyler to cause any problems. he has always been very devoted to football, his little brother, little sister and his dog.
i cant pretend to know what happened there that horrible day, and my heart is crushed for the both families, i have lost my own daughter when she was 18-at the hands of others, so i'm very aware of the other side of this. i just refuse to-believe Tyler would do something like this. i'd like to know more about what happened right before all this. what kind of altercation went down & over what?
thank you for reading, please try to keep in mind, this is a good kid, he was raised in wonderful loving home in a good neighborhood, with very hard working loving parents. two familes have just been destroyed. i'm just sick about this.

First of all, I would like to offer my sympathies to the Smith Family. The loss of a family member is heartbreaking and the loss of one so young and unexpected is devastating.
After reading this post, I knew I had to respond .When I would read stories like this in the paper, my first thought would be this person has to be a monster. Knowing someone that is accused in this type of tragedy, I will not be so judgemental in the future. Please know, I am not condoning what has happened, this is a tragedy and a waste of a life. However, I need to let people know, Tyler Hadler is not a monster.
Like the other poster, I have known Tyler and his family since he was about 8 years old. My son played football with him thru the years. When I read about this, I physically got sick to my stomach. I could not even imagine that Tyler could hurt anyone. He was a gentle soul, loyal and loving to his friends and family.
When I read both boys having drugs on their person and or in the car, this gave me an insight to what could have possibly put Tyler in a state mentally and emtionally for this to happen. Like the other poster, I too would like to know what led up to this. I have heard bits and pieces that there was arguing and physical altercations.
Tyler had the world by the horn 2 years ago, graduating from High School as a football standout, wrestler, good student and a great group of friends, that were the "In Crowd" at school. He was raised in a solid loving responsible family.
I can sadly say however, that unfortunately, he had made no deciscions about his future after graduation. He seemed to have no direction in his life and no set goals.
Drugs seem to be the common factor between the two boys from what has been released about this situation. Parents, please help, encourage and support your children to have dreams and goals for their future. Don't let drugs become their priority or their way of life.
As the other poster said, two families are destroyed and will never be the same. It goes even further then the families, I know Tyler's friends are devastated and heartbroken as I am sure Patrick's are even more so.
God speed Patrick and God Bless both families.

Tyler is my relative. I have known him his entire life.
I can't speak to the circumstances of the incident between the boys prior to Tylers actions, as this is still an open case. I will say that the actions of all boys involved that day led to this tragic event. The headline could have easily read in reverse.
The previous poster hit the nail on the head. All of these boys made bad decisions in their lifes direction. It is so important that these kids, and ones like them are given opportunity to focus their attention on positive aspects such as further education, or a career. I have made plenty of bad decisons in my life, learning from each one. But people today don't always appreciate the preciousness and fragility of life. Life is way too short as it is, and to waste yours, or take someone elses is one the biggest sadnesses that I think exist.
Tyler is not a monster, nor I doubt was Patrick Smith, the young man who died. It was simply a string of bad decisons and actions made by very young adults. It shows how in an instant many lives can be ruined, or lost.
I am very sorry for the family and friends of Patrick Smith, as I am for our family. This is not something any of us family members on either side would wish on anyone, nor had the opportunity to prevent that day, or believe me, I would have.

uh... ok. nobody said anyone was 'evil' or anything here.
However, if this person was in the habit of making 'bad choices' and actually lacked the morality required to not murder someone then nothing you can say is going to dissuade me from being very happy that he will be going to prison for a very long time.
Sorry, but my sympathy for someone's "bad choices" ends when they kill someone else.
Too bad you folks who were close to the situation couldn't take a step in and help guide these kids away from whatever path they were on. That's a big part of the real tragedy here. I'm sure you would have if you thought you could.

actually there was a comment early that has disapeared where some things were said relating to Tyler.
I think the point that several of us that know Tyler are making, is that he is not, like you stated, in the habit of making bad choices.
i dont expect for you or anyone else to have sympathy for Tyler, i'm only stating that this is a good kid from a good family and we are all shocked and heartbroken of this, for Tyler, his family & of course for the family of Patrick Smith.

Let me first say that I am Tylers uncle I live in Nashville TN. I google Tylers name after my family called to inform me of what happened. Let me first say my heart goes out to the family of the young man that was killed. I have to admit that I don't know all the facts all I know is this is tragic for both families. I think that it is important that we dont pass on false information until all the facts have come out. I can tell you that I love my nephew and will continue to pray for him as well as my sisters family. I can also say that Tyler is a wonderful young man who has never been in trouble before. Although I dont see him all the time I know that he was raised in a God fearing, loving family. I love Tyler and I want all of his friends and family to continue to pray for both familes during this time of crisis.

Update:
A West Side man who died after being pinned against a wall by a car last year had arranged to meet his killer for a drug deal, according to prosecutors in Franklin County Common Pleas Court yesterday.
Tyler Hadler, 21, of Whitehaven Drive on the Far West Side, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the death of Patrick Smith, 18.
Prosecutors gave this account of what happened on Sept. 23, 2008:
Smith and two other men had agreed to meet Hadler in a West Side alley to buy marijuana. But Smith and his buddies knocked Hadler down and took off with his stash.
