rave_til_dawn wrote Thanks for the info. I guess we'll try calling a few of the places where the purchases have been made and see if they can tell us anything about the orders. We're also going to watch any local shops that don't blank out the credit card number on their reciepts and ask if they can change that.
Visa/Mastercard actually require that all but the last 4 digits on customer receipts are masked in their agreements with retailers. I'm not sure, but you might be able to report them to VS/MC about not fulfilling their agreement (I think it would mean they have to upgrade their equipment or mechant software). This doesn't prevent employees from lifting your number though, since the store copy always is going to show all of the numbers. A friend of mine had his lifted once from a clerk at Wendy's.
Your best defense is diversifying your bank and credit accounts if you can to limit damage if/when it does happen. Some places that do direct deposit can split paychecks. Plus keeping a close eyes on your bank account activity which is vastly easier to reconcile almost on a day to day basis now that most all banks have automatic download capabilities.
The worst I had was losing my wallet in college and having someone use my id to pass a $2k stolen check at Kmart back in the 90s. The investigators put me under the hot lights :x because I never reported the wallet stolen (uh, because I lost it Columbo)...
Never had any idea you could actually spend $2k at Kmart.
Btw, what was in the package? You never said...
