Stivers plans rematch to unseat Kilroy in U.S. House

Republican Steve Stivers today will announce his candidacy for the 15th Congressional District of Ohio, setting up a 2010 rematch against Democratic Rep. Mary Jo Kilroy, who narrowly beat him last year.

Stivers, 44, plans to kick off his campaign this morning from the steps of the Union County Courthouse in Marysville. He hopes to unseat Kilroy in a district ranked among the most competitive in the nation.

"This will be an expensive race again," Stivers said.

Because nothing says "relate to the voters in a tough, economic recession" like a promise to spend wads of cash on frivolous, petty and spiteful advertising that will dominate our lives during the campaign season in the vain hope that someone will like you enough to give you a job.

I see no reason to believe that Stivers' ads will be any more of those adjectives than Kilroy's or anyone else's. As to whether the 15th will be competitive, I always laugh at prognostications of how close/competitive a district will be this far out. If unemployment in Ohio is 10% in 2010, you bet that district will be competitive (and if that's the rate within the district itself--unlikely, admittedly, since it's generally a better-than-average district on that score--Stivers will have a definite tailwind). If unemployment is back down to 6%, that won't be in many pundits' "toss up" columns on election night 2010.

I have a feeling this will go the same way as last time around, considering there will most likely be a third candidate who will take the more conservative votes from Stivers.
