80 years after State Auto Insurance Group founder Bob Pein began the tradition, State Auto will again flip the switch on its annual Christmas display Wednesday (December 5th) evening at 5:45 p.m. A brief lighting ceremony, including a performance by the Columbus Children’s Choir, will begin at 5:30 p.m.

State Auto President, Chairman and CEO Bob Restrepo will be joined at the lighting by nine-year-old Madelyne Johnson, winner of the State Auto family coloring contest. Madelyne’s winning entry will be on display at Christmas Corner throughout the Christmas season.

The Christmas Corner experience has been enhanced for visitors by allowing them to walk through the

display, which is constructed in scenes throughout State Auto’s Pein Park at the corner of East Broad Street and North 11th Street. Visitors can participate in a cell phone tour, which offers callers facts and history about each scene of the Nativity display. Additionally, State Auto employees and retirees will serve as “Nativity Volunteers,” welcoming visitors and answering questions, while hot chocolate will be available for sale many evenings through Jan. 1, with proceeds benefitting the Manna Café at Broad Street United Methodist Church. Those who check-in at Christmas Corner at facebook.com/Christmas corner will have their contributions matched by State Auto.

A number of local groups will offer free performances at the display through Christmas. All performances

    begin at 7 p.m.

Dec 8: Columbus State Gospel Vocal Ensemble

    Dec 9: Columbus Maennerchor/Damenchor

Dec 15: Signs of Christmas Choir

Dec 16: Grove City Chamber Singers

Dec 22: Meredith Temple Church of God in Christ Choir

Dec 23: Broad Street United Methodist Church Choir

From a rooftop Santa Town with thousands of lights and hundreds of Christmas trees, State Auto’s Christmas display has evolved into a display focused on a life-sized Nativity scene, recognized around the world for its beauty and attention to artistic and historic detail. In recent years, lighting and other decorations have been added, reminiscent of State Auto Christmas displays of years past.

State Auto’s Christmas Corner to host Christmas Eve ceremony

On Christmas Eve, Tuesday, December 24th at 6:30 p.m., the Christmas season will culminate with the placing of Baby Jesus in the manger at the State Auto Insurance Companies’ Christmas Corner, including the historic life-sized Nativity. Christmas Corner draws thousands of visitors throughout December, and a crowd of hundreds for this special Christmas Eve ceremony.

The Rev. Lou Seipel, pastor of the Broad Street United Methodist Church at 501 E. Broad St., will continue the tradition of having a community representative complete the display with its final element: Baby Jesus. The ceremony is brief and without fanfare, a most appropriate and fitting way to announce that Christmas has arrived. Joining Seipel will be State Auto associate Alan Tyson, who will perform musical selections during the ceremony.

State Auto’s Christmas displays, which began in 1931 as a “gift to the community” from founder Bob Pein, have evolved from a rooftop Santa Town with thousands of lights and hundreds of Christmas trees, to include the current life-size Nativity display. The display will be lighted from 6 a.m. Christmas Eve to 8 a.m. Christmas morning, and evenings every day through January 1.
