For those nerdy enough to be interested, the most recent episode of The Skeptics’ Guide to the Universe talks about some of the science in the movie and touches upon some of the plot holes we talked about. It’s about 38 minutes in.

I am the biggest Star Trek geek here. As proof, yesterday I purchased the newly released 15 CD set of the complete soundtracks to the 1966-69 TV series.

17 hours of music. It is going to take me a long time to listen to all of it. It will arrive in the mail in a few days. It is going to take a long time just to load it onto my iPod.

Jesus this looks awesome. I think I’ve seen the first reboot about twenty-five times now. Great flick.

I got the CD set on Saturday. I have listened to 2 of the 15 CDs already. The tracks of music actually used are very, very familiar. But there are also alternate takes. There is one track that includes, I think, a recording of the first ever attempt by the orchestra to play the main theme. Disk 5 Track 73 is six takes of the main theme played with an orchestra and an electric violin.

There are also a number of sound effects that were done by the orchestra. They have a track where you hear a voice say to a musician: “That crazy pitch thing that you’ve got. Pull it down a half-tone and up again and make it sound like the flutes did before.” A few seconds later, you hear the transporter sound effect.

And then there is Disk 5 track 71: “MX1 take 1″ the SWOOSH of the Enterprise going by.
