This is a tough one for me. I'm not a fan of Stahler at all --I think his cartoons tend to be lazy and uninspired --but I don't think drawing a cartoon with a single phrase or image that reminiscent of an earlier cartoon makes you a plagiarist. Plus I'm sure it would be an easy thing to do subconsciously, especially if you read a lot of cartoons which I assume any cartoonist does.
That said, I do seem to remember reading a Stahler cartoon a while back --not any of the ones mentioned in this or other articles --and thinking "didn't I just read this in the New Yorker?"
